Kellie Pickler's 2008 self-titled sophomore album offers encouraging signs. Her status as a feisty American Idol runner-up earned her a Nashville recording contract and a successful first album. This time out, she is aided by sharp production (by Chris Lindsey) and a number of smart, memorable tunes (five of which she co-wrote). Pickler’s singing is still on the lighter side, well-suited to buoyant material like “I’m Your Woman” and “Best Days of Your Life” (the latter co-written by fellow AI alumnus Taylor Swift). She romps through the deliciously catty “Rocks Instead of Rice” and winks at her own ditzy image in “Goin’ Out in Style.” Her ballads aren’t as consistent — “Somebody to Love Me” works as country-pop melodrama, while “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You” can feel heavy-handed. She connects solidly with “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful,” a self-esteem anthem reminiscent of Martina McBride’s “This One’s For the Girls.”

Sassy, Fun, & Amazing

Kellie Pickler's sophomore album has finally rolled around, and it looks as if it's going to be rolling in the album sales. The material for her second album is miles ahead of Small Town Girl and it features many AMAZING songs! Her gal pal Taylor Swift has contributed to the album by co-writing the fun "Best Days of Your Life" and adding backing vocals to it. Without question this song is bound to be a hit and is quite catchy. If someone wants to buy just one song, this is the one to get. Then on the other side of the scale there is the majorly powerful ballad "One Last Time" the chorus is bound to give a person chills. The rest of the songs are super fun, catchy, well put together and just amazing. Everyone needs to buy the album (:

Pickler pulls through "ups and downs" as a strong artist.

Kellie Pickler’s sophomore album quite literally makes her humble yet poignant debut look like chopped liver. Two years, hundreds of concerts, and 1 remarkable album later, Pickler is headed for the big time. The album begins with a catchy number. “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful”. While arguably the weakest track on the album, it still sends a powerful message to every listener. You can’t possibly finish listening without feeling good about yourself. The following track, “I’m Your Woman”, is a Shania-twain, pop-country territory song. Kellie sounds very convincing and her voice is about as sweet as honey. “Rocks Instead of Rice” is a pretty flawless cutesy country song. Pickler jokingly chants she’d rather throw “Rocks” at the newly weds than rice. A purely enjoyable number. The next track, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You” may look familiar, that’s because it appeared on Pickler’s debut – Small Town Girl –however, the overproduced version from Small Town Girl pales in comparison to the beautiful instrumental breaks and stronger vocals on the new album. Number 5, “Lucky Girl” is a track originally recorded by Catherine Britt. I tend to prefer Pickler’s version, due to the schmaltzy elegance of her natural twang. She pulls it off again, yet another brilliant track. “One Last Time” is just flawless. Pickler’s voice sounds about as pure as possible during the verses, and soars into an impeccable chorus. I am not sure that any of the other country blondes who are popular on the charts right now could pull off such a smooth transition. “Best Days of Your Life” was written by Pickler and Taylor Swift during a tour with Brad Paisley. The song is a fun, and insanely catchy, upbeat number that has been set for the second single. It will hopefully be Pickler’s first top ten hit on country radio. “Somebody To Love Me”, a heart wrenching ballad, comes straight from Pickler. She describes the said period as one of the darkest in her lifetime. A beautiful, well sung vocal. “Makin’ Me Fall In Love Again” is probably a buffer for the dark and solemn songs previous. It’s not a standout track, but purely enjoyable. “Going Out In Style” is reminiscent of a Pickler track from her previous album, “One Of The Guys”. It’s purely Kellie, with plenty of name drops and fun vocals. With an impressively standout country cd like this, it would be madness for Pickler not to catch the ear of avid fans and new listeners. 5 stars!

This time, it's all "Kellie Pickler"

Kellie Pickler calls her second album simply "Kellie Pickler." That's appropriate because the songs reflect more of her unique outlook and larger-than-life personality. At the same time, the album fuses two years of musical maturity -- hundreds of concerts and sessions with Nashville's best song writers -- with the work of a hand-picked producer who brings out Kellie's best. All this adds up to a rich, well-rounded album that gives us more insight into Kellie Pickler than ever before. I love all the tracks, but my personal favorites are: "Best Days of Your Life" -- Kellie lets an ex-boyfriend know he peaked when he dated her. Co-written with Taylor Swift, who sings background vocals, this tune shows breakout potential. "One Last Time" -- One of three great ballads on the album. A relationship is too draining to continue, but a last spark of desire remains. "Lucky Girl" -- Smokin' hot and perfectly arranged. From now on, when you hear "sexy country siren," this is the song you'll hear in your head. "Going Out In Style" -- An over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek intro kicks off this lively, humorous tribute to excessive consumption. "Don't Close Your Eyes" -- Kellie enriches the offerings on the Deluxe version with a beautiful pure country classic. Kellie's cover of the Keith Whitley classic reminds us that she can sing traditional country as well as anyone today. True to the original, it also shows country fans how much we miss Whitley.
