Though Keys to the Highway couldn't live up to the massive commercial success of Diamonds and Dirt, in many ways it's a more subtle, personal album. The tone is set by “Soul Searchin’.” Even though the song is ostensibly about a man rediscovering a lost love from his youth, in a larger sense it's about Crowell’s rediscovery of himself. Keys to the Highway was written after the death of Crowell’s father, and in many ways it's about attaining the simplicity and security of family. It contains several beautifully acoustic songs, so spare and honest that they seem more like folk songs than country songs: “Many a Long and Lonesome Highway,” “Things I’d Wish I’d Say," and “Don’t Let Your Feet Slow You Down.” The theme of time and personal history come to bear on “The Faith Is Mine,” which offers a piece of Crowell’s most poignant philosophy: “I've seen my future look back on my heart/Don't know the ending, but I know where to start/My past is healin', it's alarmin' the fate/This time tomorrow, it could all be a race tumblin' by.”

Keys To the Highway

It is amazing to me that this album didn't do better than it did. Maybe I like it so much because it spoke to me personally; my mother was dying when I heard Rodney talking about "Things I Wish I'd Said" on an NPR interview. Listening to the song made me think "I could have written the same thing about my relationship with my mother." This album is underrated. If you like departures from the standard Nashville country formula, buy it.

great album with staying power, you won't easily get tired of it

when i was younger we listened to this and diamonds to dirt countless times on our family vacations, note, we didn't get tired of it.
Rodney crowell is an amazing, and underrated talent. He, being a singer song writer, has the ability to make you feel his music, and undoubtedly some of these songs will connect with you personally. And not only the lyrics, but the music is top notch, this album is a can't miss, and you will not be disappointed, go ahead and sample the songs, and buy the whole thing, it's great, i still have my old cassette tape of "keys to the highway" always to remind me of those vacation road trips.
