iTunes Review
Metallica's debut album proved a shocking and audacious opening battle cry for a new generation of metalheads who were crawling around the metal underground looking for a leader. Released in 1983, Kill 'Em All combined the primordial, rudimentary riffage of Black Sabbath with the intricate, melodic overtures of Iron Maiden played at the speed of Motorhead and hardcore punk. This new 'thrash' became the schematic for hundreds (thousands?) of bands that would follow, eschewing commercial heavy metal's penchant for big hair, spandex and pop hooks and replacing it with full-on aggression. Later releases would expand on their approach and reach greater compositional complexity, but for sheer raw power tracks such as "Hit the Lights,""Jump in the Fire," the appropriately named "Whiplash," and "Seek and Destroy" are unrelenting. Singer James Hetfield's histrionic growl still elicits strong melodies as it keeps time with his carpal-tunnel rhythm guitar playing. Drummer Lars Ulrich's boundless energy never flails. And underneath the maniacal charge, one can hear the beginnings of the lyrical guitar lines that guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Cliff Burton would bring forth with greater emphasis on later releases. A basic metal primer.

The Greatest Thrash Album Of All Time
Originally called "Metal Up Your A**" Metallica's debut is in my opinion the greatest thrash album of all time. Many will argue that Slayer's "Reign in Blood" should bare that title. I disagree for several reasons. "Kill 'Em All" was released three years before "Reign" and "Kill 'Em All" is a more technically proficient album. There was no other band that sounded like this in 1983. "Reign in Blood" was Slayer's third studio album. Metallica hit the nail on the head with their first release. If you compare Slayer's first studio album "Show No Mercy" (also released in '83) to "Kill 'Em All" you'll see that Metallica were miles ahead of any other band in their genre. Songs like "The Four Horsemen" and "Phantom Lord" were multilayered precursors to the epic "Master of Puppets". "Whiplash", "No Remorse" and "Metal Militia" are full out thrash fests. The reason the album title was changed from "Metal Up Your a**" to "Kill 'Em All" was because record executives would not release an album with such a (what they percieved to be ) profaine title. Cliff's reaction to this was "Why don't we just kill 'em all?" Hence, you have the title from Metallica's stunning debut.
Where it all began.
This album is sooo awesome and has some good songs to headbang too. BANG YOUR HEAD TO THIS ALBUM LIKE YOU NEVER DID BEFORE!!!
1 out of the 2 greatest thrash metal albums of all time.
Personally, this is one of my favorite thrash metal albums (besides Ride the Lightning, which is really good) and I love how it's recorded cheaply, because you get that raw metal sound. This album, and Ride the Lightning are pretty much the greatest Thrash Metal albums of all time!
