What does a metal band do when they’ve demolished everything they’ve set out to demolish? Create more anthems to chaos, naturally. For its second self-titled album (the first was its 2000 debut) Killswitch Engage’s melodic metalcore brutality gets a facelift. Producer Brendan O’Brien pushed vocalist Howard Jones to enunciate and sing more and the difference can be heard on “The Forgotten” and “The Return” with Jones clearly channeling his inner Bruce Dickinson. The band matches his focus and intensity; the first two singles “Reckoning” and “Starting Over” reveal a leaner, cleaner KsE firing on all pistons. The twin guitar work of Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel and drummer Justin Foley’s double kick work create a worthy soundtrack for the hardest MMA entrance music or the gnarliest Wall of Death pits. Metalcore is crowded with pretenders and Killswitch Engage is a convincing argument for KsE’s ascension to the throne.

Hard to get used to this
obviously this is my opinion, and in this great country im obligated to express it, so bear with me All ive heard from these older metalcore bands now-a-days is "this album is gonna be heavier then before, but more melodic then before." in terms of killswitch, the first self-titled was heavy, Alive or just Breathing was super heavy, the latest self-titled (which doesnt make sense) is heavy, for a band like 3 days grace. this does nothing for me. i fell in love with killswitch engage with the release of alive or just breathing, because jesse knew when to be emotional with his lyrics, and when to be influential. howard keeps singing about heartache and heart break. man, it was great the first album, but 2 albums later, i have a hard time realizing he cant come up with anything more original. in terms of the music. they play a verse thats heavy with howard screaming, then it goes back to the same chorus of howard singing, every song. there is no originality, cuz we heard this with the last album. hell, i cant remember the last time they threw a breakdown in a song... why not put one in? no one is expecting them to. they are stuck doing the same things with each of their songs. howard screams, howard sings, howard screams a litle bit more, howard sings the rest of the song. i told myself before this album i would buy it without listening to the music beforehand. i also told myself if it didnt meet the expectations i had set for KsE, i would never buy an album again. for me, the band Killswitch Engage had an awesome run, but its time for me to stop getting my hopes up with them. i hope this helped
This is the Beginning of Heartache!!
I've been listening to this band since Jesse was with them and I never thought they would put out a "sell-out" album, but I was wrong. This has to be considered their "Black" album and here are the reasons I say this: 1. Not much screaming going on. At least 2 songs have no screaming in it and the rest that do have it, it's not much. 2. Not one song in this album gets me pumped! This is the Killswitch Engage album you play for your girlfriend to break her into some type of metal. Long gone are the End of Heartache, Rose of Sharyn, Arms of Sorrow and My Curse melodic heart pumping riffs that put them on the map in the Metalcore Genre. To me, this whole CD sounds like B-sides and rarities. 3. Adam doesn't scream or sing. 4. Every song is just so bland; it's not the Killswitch we've been listening to all these years. I still love these guys and will continue to support them, but I hope they can come back from this and not slip into the grasp of MTV. If they do, Killswitch Engage will be on tour with Nickelback soon.
Dissapointment
Not as good as "As Daylight Dies". The whole album seems kind of bland.
