Album Review

Arguably one of Sparks' best albums, 1974's Kimono My House finds the brothers Mael (Ron wrote most the songs and played keyboards, while Russell was the singing frontman) ingeniously playing their guitar- and keyboard-heavy pop mix on 12 consistently fine tracks. Adding a touch of bubblegum, and even some of Zappa's own song-centric experimentalism to the menu, the Maels spruce up a sleazy Sunset Strip with a bevy of Broadway-worthy performances here: as the band expertly revs up the glam rock-meets-Andrew Lloyd Webber backdrops, Russell sends things into space with his operatic vocals and ever-clever lyrics. And besides two of their breakthrough hits (the English chart-toppers "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" and "Amateur Hour"), the album features one of their often-overlooked stunners, "Here in Heaven." Essential.

The Greatest Pop Album Of All Time

This album sets the template for any band professing to do intelligent, sophisticated pop music. Ron Mael's lyrical achievements on Kimono will one day be recognized as being in the same league as Noel Coward. Honest, they will! No one in music has matched the intricacy and smarts of this album; hard-hitting, sensitive, charming. Everything that is lacking in the current pop climate and status quo. Treat yourself to the best. Treat yourself to Sparks. It's not too late.

Very amazing

And if you've never heard the Sparks before, this is a great place to start. Russell has like, an AMAZING vocal range, and Ron writes the weirdest (and best) lyrics.

1974

This album came out in 1974. It is rougher around the edges than their current work, and the musicianship is not quite as polished . . . but the acerbic wit and original approach to lyrics is priceless. It is also the reason that this relatively obscure group (wake up America!) continues to make amazing music to this day (2009+).

Sparks is the vehicle for the skewed pop smarts and wise-guy wordplay of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, Los Angeles natives who spent their childhood modeling young men's apparel for mail-order catalogs. While attending UCLA in 1970, the Maels formed their first group, Halfnelson, which featured songwriter Ron on keyboards and Russell as lead vocalist; the...
