Album Review

Recorded in front of an enthusiastic audience and released just one week before Curtis' murder in 1971, Live at Fillmore West is a brilliant confirmation of the saxophonist's place in popular music. Backed up by Atlantic's top session men, as well as Billy Preston and the Memphis Horns, Curtis rips through some of the biggest hits of the day, transforming them into showcases for his soulful playing and the group's outstanding rhythmic interplay. Beautiful renditions of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "I Stand Accused" are highlights, but it's full-throttle rockers like "Changes" and "Memphis Soul Stew" that comprise the heart of the album. Curtis occasionally gets lost in the mix, but it doesn't matter; with so much great music going on, you probably won't notice.

Can't be beat

I've heard a live cut of Soul Serenade by the Allman Brothers Band where Duane, who had played with King Curtis, talks this album up as one of the greatest of all time. He's right (and if you can't trust Duane Allman, who can you trust?) so you should hear this too. The backing musicians are all-stars, including Billy Preston on organ. Wonderful music. At the same shows this group backed Aretha Franklin who was joined by Ray Charles for a live jam that's on the deluxe edition of her live at Fillmore album. Do yourself a favor and get both sets.

duane allman wouldn't talk up a bad album

i heard about this album (just like the other reviewer) while listening to a live cut of the allmans "you don't love me" where duane starts talking about how much he loved king curtis and how everyone should go pick up this record. so i did. and i was REALLY pleased. it's fantastic. thanks for the heads up skydog!

"The King" of Funky Sax

I love love love this album. So much groovin' going on here. "Changes" is probably my favorite from this album. Every member in the band shines on this song. Take a listen to Billy Preston's organ solo on this one. WOW.
Ode To Billie Joe is another favorite of mine. This is a nice mellow funk tune where Curtis uses some kind of wah wah effect on the sax.
Soul Serenade closes out the set in a very very good way. It's so smooth you'll melt.

If you're lookin' for some jammmin' sax and a funkin' good record, then you need to get this one.

King Curtis was the last of the great R&B tenor sax giants. He came to prominence in the mid-'50s as a session musician in New York, recording, at one time or another, for most East Coast R&B labels. A long association with Atlantic/Atco began in 1958, especially on recordings by the Coasters. He recorded singles for many small labels in the '50s — his own Atco sessions (1958-1959), then Prestige/New Jazz and Prestige/TruSound for jazz and R&B albums (1960-1961). Curtis also had...
