Album Review

King for a Day is not a boast from Mickey Dolenz — nor is it a collection of XTC covers — it’s an album-length salute to Carole King, one of the great pop songwriters of the 20th Century. Dolenz isn’t necessarily such a skilled singer that he redefines or reinterpret these songs but these songs aren’t designed for showboating: these are songs that belong to everyone, songs where anyone can sing along, so they lend themselves to Mickey’s cheerful readings. He’s so friendly it’s possible to hear him smile as he sings even on songs that perhaps should have a bittersweet bent (“Will You Love Me Tomorrow”) or are just downright sweetly sad (“Crying in the Rain”), but this is unabashed, unapologetic nostalgia.

Great concept; great album; great singer

Micky Dolenz is a tremendous singer who despite all the success he's had is still underrated as a vocalist. What a great idea to match those vocals with one of the greatest popular songwriters. This is really a wonderful album.

A great treat from an under utilized talent !

Micky Dolenz pays tribute in song to a woman whose bank account he has helped in more ways than most people know. The meteoric sales of the three best most popular Monkees albums put MILLIONS on the books for Carole King and her then husband/writing partner Gerry Goffin. They continue to reap those royalties today, much more so than the guys who sang the songs...

"King for a Day" is a solid piece of work from a wonderfully talented, multifaceted musician and showman! If you are a fan of King's style, you will enjoy the Dolenz touch on such classics as "Sweet Seasons" and "Up on the Roof". The update on "Sometime in the Morning" will please fans of the Monkees no doubt, and the kids are going to love his duet with Emily Osment on "I Feel the Earth Move".

This isn't rocket science, it is just a fun collection of King masterpieces from one of the most entertaining performers we have been able to enjoy literally all our lives. Thanks for giving us this Micky...now...hit the road so we can come see you sing them in person!

one of the most underrated singers

Micky Dolenz has one of the best voices in rock history. He is so underrated, which I think is because of the critics (and I mean all the critics) total writing off the Monkees' career as a made up band with no talent. The Monkees actualy made some classic albums that stood the test of time and it was Micky's voice that is so recognizable on those recordings. On "King for a Day" Micky brings a new reading of some timeless Carol King tunes and anyone who is over 30 (or under 30 for that matter)should buy this CD download) and just listen and be happy that he decided to record again. Great job Micky and don't let us wait so long for your next CD.

Dolenz was born in Los Angeles to George and Janelle Dolenz, both show business people themselves. By the age of six, Dolenz was already doing screen tests, and by the age of ten, he had landed his first role as Corky on Circus Boy.
