Elfman goes electronic!

Well, not entirely. But it's really cool to hear some trippy electronic sounds mixed with an orchestra or guitars. This is a total departure for Danny Elfman, and it's reallllly cool. I think the edginess of the chase-type pieces make the melancholy pieces that much more beautiful. Listen to the last cue, "Finale" if you're looking for traditional soundtrack-type stuff.

HUZZAH! Enter into Elfman's Kingdom!

This is coming from somewhat of an uber-fan. I love Elfman's music from Oingo Boingo to his movie scores. Needless to say he is my favorite composer. Unfortunately though because I listen to everything he has done I tend to hear the patterns, cues, cuts, variants of the same themes, etc. (which is not uncommon for composers. I don't know of any who do not dip into their own melodic pool) Not so with the Kingdom. I felt Elfman's score for this film was not only incredible, but very original from his earlier works. I define Elfman's music into 3 categories (Oingo Boingo not withstanding) 1.) Lighthearted/Adventurous (Charlotte's web, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Meet the Robinsons.) 2.) Fantasy/Sympathetic (Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Spider-Man.) 3.) Edgy/Suspenseful (Red Dragon, Planet of the Apes, the Hulk) The Kingdom is certainly suspenseful! The closest I could come to compare with other music he has written would be Planet of the Apes and the HULK. This is a great score and a solid purchase. Elfman fans will love it and I think those Tender Lumplings on the edge should definitely give it a try. ;-D

Elfman Branches Out

"Waiting", "Friendship", and the memorable "Finale" are all excellent examples of Elfman's ability to produce nostalgia inducing work layered over an otherwise action-oriented and somewhat depressing subject matter. When I think of Danny Elfman, I think of Batman or Edward Scissor Hands; anything fanciful and other-worldly. The Kingdom is proof that Elfman can handle his own outside of the 'Burton' genres and excell in the more grounded arena of dramatic ambience.
