iTunes Review

Keith Urban’s fifth studio album resonates with optimism, hope, wisdom, romance, and of course fun. Defying Gravity is an apt title for a truly uplifting album that blends catchy country-pop with barbed power pop, sounding inadvertently rooted in early Tom Petty and Dwight Twilley recordings. “Kiss a Girl” is a triumphantly anthemic insta-hit musing on the kind of youthful exuberance found in the charge of a first kiss. Similarly, “Sweet Thing” is a summery feel-good number that wonderfully contrasts Edgy (think U2) guitars with front porch banjos. Of course it wouldn’t be a proper Keith Urban album without amorous power ballads and “’Til Summer Comes Around” delivers in spades with vividly painted imagery of fleeting and impassioned moments set to hot nights at the beach boardwalk. He gives Radney Foster’s “I’m In” a trademark Urban sound to play like something that could have been on 2006’s Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing. The moving “Thank You” is a sweet serenade to his wife Nicole Kidman that touches on her helping him battle and defeat his addiction.

I hadn't bought a country album for years, but just on a whim I watched the Country Music Awards this week and I was amazed at Keith Urban's performance. I thought it was the best actual musical performance of the night (I'm not into the glitz and hip grinding). There was something about the tone of his voice at times, and I was blown away by his guitar playing. He's so much better than what I would think of as pure country twang. I resisted for two days, but ended up buying his "Gravity" and "Greatest Hits" albums. I've been pleasantly surprised by them both. Actually very good!
