iTunes Review

Le Butcherettes are led by the sexy and slightly scary Teri Gender Bender (Teresa Suarez), a powerhouse rock ’n’ roll performer. She plays guitar and sings, clad in distressed and bloodied party dresses and house aprons, and delivers risqué invitations with an edgy, throaty shriek. Bridging the riot grrl sound of the ‘90s with a garage- punk sensibility, there’s also a serious case of the blues in the raspy creep of the guitar and the thrusting rhythms underpinning Bender’s f-bomb-loaded lyrics. The swampy grind of “Honey Honey” and “I’m Queen” recalls both the Cramps and the Gun Club, and the punk yelp of “Last Tear” conjures the Avengers and Sleater-Kinney. Begun as a duo in Mexico City, drummer Auryn Jolene left the band shortly after the release of Kiss & Kill, which won the award for Best Punk Record at the 2009 Indie-O Awards in Mexico. Suarez moved to L.A. and put together a trio for the band’s follow-up, Sin Sin Sin, and envisions spreading her own feminist gospel -- “Butcherism” -- to the unenlightened masses. She’s a powerful evangelist, so consider yourselves warned.

The bare bones of punk rock

No bells and absolutely no whistles will be found on this album. Its straight forward, simple, raw punk rock from two attractive ladies with some dark emo flaire and a serious blood lust (google the bands name and look at their pictures if you have no idea what I'm talking about). This is a love it or hate it sound since there is very little production value here. As with most bands wtih a simple sound, the tracks blur together even on a short album such as this. This album reminds a lot of Best Coast although not in any way shape or form is that related to them both having a similar sound. Best Coast and Le Butcherettes have a unique style, but simply don't have the creativity or skill to deliver a full length album so they deliver these bite sized songs that still end up sounding the same. In all honesty some of the tracks such as "The Problems Hide in Our Backs" and "Feminist Politics" aren't even songs. My advice: buy Kiss & Kill if you like their sound and leave the rest in the dust. If you're into derivative blues, listen to Honey Honey.

Formed: 2008 in Mexico City, Mexico

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Le Butcherettes were founded in Mexico in 2008 by vocalist/guitarist Teri Gender Bender (Denver-born and Mexican-bred Teri Suarez) and former drummer Auryn Jolene. The band quickly garnered underground acclaim for its outrageous live shows: They dressed in '50s-era women's clothing, and employed —for p[olitical purpoises—feather dusters, brooms, aprons, fake blood, flour, eggs, meat, and a real pig's head—depicting women as slaves of the household. Jolene left the band in 2009....
