Decent takes on some KISS classics

Gotta tell ya.....absolutely love the version of Detroit Rock City, hats off to the Gene Walk Group. AMAZINGLY out of the box vision of a KISS classic.

"Oh no, not another Kiss tribute album"

...is what you're probably saying. And yes, there are probably more than enough of them out there, but the folks at Main Man Records have never disappointed with their tributes. Granted, this is an older one (how is this the first review of an album that came out 7 years ago?) but I trust MM to offer up a bunch of artist that do the original artist justice. And as usual, MM came through. An exclusive Donnas track? How the f*ck did they manage that? I know it was originally on a 7" single, but this is the only way to get a digital copy of it. This version of "Speedin' Back To My Baby" is loose and sloppy, exactly what you'd expect from an early Donnas recording, and the crazy thing is it's not the only song from Ace Frehley's solo album (which was technically a Kiss album). Frankenstein 3000 (who have become one of my favorite bands) are here with their version of "Rip It Out". Man, these guys rock. It's sandwiched between a punk version of "Beth" and a fantastic version of "Do You Love Me?" from Shawn Mars that starts off like a Radiohead song but quickly morphs into a kick-a*s rock track. Ze Malibu Kids (aka Jeff and Stephen MacDonald from Redd Kross) do a bizarre version of "Plaster Caster". Flat Morrison, All Boro Kings and George Is Dead show their love of Kiss with great takes on some classic tunes. Digger Phelps surprised me with their cover of "C'Mon And Love Me". You can tell these guys grew up on Kiss and were probably waiting their whole lives for a chance to record one of their songs. Billy Rubin's "Cold Gin" is almost unrecognizable (although not as much as "Plaster Caster"). "Detroit Rock City" becomes a Bon Jovi-esque slow burn rocker, and Electric Magic Sideshow (really?) so a traight-ahead version of "Got To Choose". If things got a little dull for a while there, Stag picks it back up with "She", one of Kiss's heaviest tunes. "I Stole Your Love" by Spank Daddy is pretty straightforward, but there's some good guitar work. "Heaven's On Fire" is the most recent Kiss tune on the tribute and with good reason: it was the best song from the non-make-up era. Luzer's "Hard Luck Woman" might be my favorite song on the collection. Really creative, it keeps the feel of the original but injects a little humor. Female-fronted Tick Non Stop give us "Makin' Love" (how interesting to hear a chick singing it). "Coming Home" is done as if it were a Bruce Springsteen song (most of these bands are from New Jersey, so a little Bruce had to seep in somewhere). Blister's "Let Me Go Rock 'N' Roll" but it's a little slow... the rhythm seems to stiff. Slack takes the already-heavy "God Of Thunder" and make it downright behemoth. "Hotter Than Hell" sounds like a couple Chiller Theater hosts f*cking around in the studio. It's weird but weirdly works. Mutant Monster Beach Party, a sort of supergroup, submit "Nothin' To Lose" for your approval (and I give it a thumbs up). Finally is the hidden track, "All The Way" by Frankenstein 3000. How they got the muffled production of the original is beyond me, but once again Frankenstein 3000 proves why they can take another band's song and make it their own.
