Album Review
Hot Hot Heat's frantic and punky style created a buzz as soon as the band emerged out of Victoria, Canada's flourishing scene. Their Knock Knock Knock CD quickly turned heads. It starts off with the intense "Le Le Low." The addition of piano on "5 Times out of 100" adds a calm gracefulness to the disc. Keyboards are mixed with synthesizer on the third track, "Have a Good Sleep." Steve Bays' voice makes him an ideal punk rock vocalist. His voice is brash, as it rises over the chaotic instrumentation, especially on "Touch You Touch You." Things slow down on the beginning of the disc's final track, "More for Show." The music eventually evolves back into their standard sound of rollicking indie rock. The first two tracks were recorded at Mansion Studios by John Aiello. The other songs were recorded by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla at his Hall of Justice studio. Sub Pop released the EP in early 2002. Bays adds keyboards, while Dante DeCaro performs on guitar, Paul Hawley on drums, and Dustin Hawthorne on bass.

A Great Transition From Old HHH to New HHH
Although not as well known or as well acclaimed as Hot Hot Heat's Makeup The Breakdown, Knock Knock Knock is one of their most revolutionary albums. Before Knock Knock Knock, Hot Hot Heat had the potential to create great music. However, their garage pop style and strangely suitable lyrics were held back by lack of production resources. In 2000, Steve Bays replaced Matt Marnik's vocals and helped to create this first album of powerful lyrics combined with an upbeat indie rock feel. In a sense, this is HHH's first album because it combines their old beats with new vocals and creates a never before heard style. Released right after Knock Knock Knock and of the same style was their greatest album, Makeup The Breakdown. However, HHH's most recent album, Elevator, lacks the inspiration and emotion of their older albums and emerges as a mainstream record.
This album is simply amazing
wow. This EP is so amazing! EVERY SINGLE SONG IS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! The vocals by the wonderful Steve Bays are extraordinary, how does he do it?i must say the best song is More For Show, but you should definently purchase the whole album! Hot Hot Heat is my favorite band, and this EP is a large part of why i love them so much! The sound is sooo unique and refreshing! Buy it!
huh.
what's with the one star? it's probably a mistake. i liked his voice changing. it made it seem .. real. their newest release -- elevator -- didn't have this much .. raw-feeling. i love it. their drumming is AMAZING, the guitaring makes me want to dance, and the singer gives these lyrics life. an AMAZING cd, i recommend buying this one .. maybe even if you're just learning about them now. their best, even.
