Album Review

In September 2005, Stereolab simultaneously issued three new 7" singles — instead of an accompanying CD collection, the groop instead assembled all six tracks as a digital EP, available for download via sites including iTunes and PlayLouder. The two-part "Kyberneticka Babicka" is connect-the-dots Stereolab — complete with hallmarks like spiraling micro-melodies, bubbling Moogs, hopscotching rhythms, and harmonies as thick and sugary as cake frosting, the record is so rote it veers into self-parody. Much better is "Plastic Mile," which returns to the effervescent and elegant squiggle-pop Stereolab perfected circa the Fluorescences EP — less about reinventing the wheel than returning to the womb, the song is all pastel colors and soft edges, proving yet again that no other band has better understood or articulated the gravitas of weightlessness. "Interlock" captures Stereolab at its most soulful, with a bracing introduction suggesting the Motown sound dipped in white chocolate. You'll never mistake Laetitia Sadier for Martha Reeves, of course, but rarely has the groop made music quite so playful and upbeat — and like so many Motown classics, the buoyant melody masks harsh social critique, with Sadier posing the musical question, "What good is all this knowledge we've acquired in the face of deep nihilism?" And the closing "Visionary Road Maps" serves up squelchy disco grooves that gradually disintegrate like aging celluloid liquefying in a projector.

So cool i had to get it for my iPod too!!!

I orginally bought the 3 7' that this comes in, but since I have yet to have a way to encode my vinyl to my iPod, I had to get this too cause they are so great! It seems to be shying away from that Jazzy Bossanova vibe that they went to with both Margerine and their previous, ... Milky Night, and back to the more moogy garage sounds of older. Stereolab are definite indy socialist demi-gods! :-P

They keep going and going...

It's always exciting to hear what Stereolab will come up with next..True pioneers. To stay strong after losing a key member in such a tragic way and following it with their last brilliant effort, INSTANT O & MARGERINE ECLIPSE..is a tough act to follow. Kyberneticka parts 1 & 2, are the strongest tracks here on their latest. The Phillip Glass-like soundscape is mezmorising..worth experiencing on headphones..The EP then shifts into the abrupt and oddly out of place Plastic Mile. Rainphase is classic formula...Interlock picks up the pieces..a 70s sounding funk meets cop show..with a great break and vintage synth sound..Visionary is sweet but lacks depth..my only complaint is in the recording levels of the drums..a true back seat..sounds like Monade is carrying over a liitle to much. Regardless Sterelolab fans will be more then satisfied.
