Album Review

When Lalah Hathaway's self-titled debut album came out in 1990, there was reason to believe that she might evolve into one of the top female R&B singers of the 1990s. Donny Hathaway's daughter certainly had a lot going for her — not only a big vocal range, but also plenty of charisma, passion, and charm to go with it. The material on this CD ranges from excellent to routine, depending on who's writing and/or producing a particular song. Hathaway doesn't always have fantastic material to work with, but when she does, the results are quite memorable. The producers/songwriters who really do Hathaway justice include Angela Winbush on "Baby, Don't Cry" and "I Gotta Move On," and Andre Fisher on "Smile" and "Somethin'." While those selections come across as personal, Hathaway slips into a routine, less-than-memorable urban contemporary grind thanks to Chuckii Booker on "Sentimental," and Craig T. Cooper on "Obvious" and "U-Godit Gowin On." Again, not everything on the album is a gem. But when Hathaway had strong material to work with, it was clear that she had a lot of potential.

Check it Out

Lalah's chic vocal stylings are indeed rare and a treasure for the ears. Finally available an iTunes, her debut album is rich with timeless R&B that evoke very tender memories for those who were priveledged to experience this work when it was released. Those new to Lalah's voice will appreciate the intensity of "I'm Coming Back", the flair she carries in the hit "Heaven Know's", and the smooth song of love and loss "I Gotta Move On". I must admit I may be biased about this album for it came out during a very wonderful time in my life, but I must say, it was the among first I ever looked for on iTunes!

Amazing

I fell in love with Lalah's music the moment I heard it in 1990. The beautiful notes in these songs were a joy then and now.

A True Classic

FINALLY! Lalah's debut is on iTunes. Lalah Hathaway's voice is rich and deep just like her father, Donny Hathaway. This album is one of a kind and the cool thing about it is that it combines the hip elements of R&B with the smoothness of Jazz. The highlights are "Baby Don't Cry", "Stay Home Tonight", "I'm Coming Back", & "Smile". In my opinion, this is one of the best albums of 1990, if not the best!

The daughter of the great Donny Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway made a good impression with her debut recording, Lalah Hathaway, in 1990. She not only displayed poise, confidence, and good technique, but was also versatile enough to do more than just light urban contemporary ballads. Her stage shows included jazz, pre-rock pop, and even gospel, and Hathaway later appeared on BET doing jazz and fusion. After her second and final album for Virgin, 1994's A Moment, she went on a lengthy hiatus, returning in...
