Album Review

Though much less expansive than Mangione's other Mercury concerts (only 37 minutes on a single CD or LP), Land of Make Believe is the most successful of the lot, a winning combination of attractive tunes, big-thinking orchestrations, just enough jazz content, and a genuinely felt sense of idealism. Here there is no dead weight; all of the material is very engaging and the combined forces of Mangione's quartet and the Hamilton (Ontario) Philharmonic are on fire. The performance of Mangione's "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor" still exerts a ferocious jolt of life-affirming energy, "El Gato Triste" is an attractive Latin number, and the buoyant "Gloria" from The Mass of St. Bernard with the Horsehead Chamber Singers makes one want to hear more. The childlike title tune has both a touching sense of naïveté and a lot of drive in key spots — credit expert drummer Joe LaBarbera with the latter — and Esther Satterfield's clear-eyed Nancy Wilson-like vocals made her famous for a time. This would be Mangione's most irresistible attempt at embracing the whole world of music — and for awhile, it was possible to believe that he would become a major unifying figure in American music. Alas, thus far this would be the last full flowering of that promise. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Classic Mangione

7th grade in 1976, Mrs. Feller played this for the music class and I was introduced to and fell in love with contemporary jazz. Listening to Land of Make Believe causes me to get goose bumps every time. This is truly one of those pieces that never gets old. Chuck at his very best.

Gloroius

I'm sure this is 1974-1977. I would go to bed, place this album on the turntable with the arm up to repeat. Inevitably, music and dream would unite to create trancendental. One of the most memorable pieces of music in my life.

Make Believe- a great party song

I recall that this originally came out in the mid 70s. But I could be wrong as it says released in 1985. I say 70s because I distinctly remember that a friend and I used to put this album on and just start dancing when "Land of Make Believe" came on. And we first met in about 1974 and that is the time period I recall. Anyway, It was so much fun. Even though this was not a hugely popular album even then we loved it and I would bring this album to parties and before you knew it, the whole place was doing a conga line around the kitchen table into the living room and throughout the house. Of course some imbiding was taking place, but this was the perfect party song. Ah the good old days! Don't remember much about the rest of the album, but I downloaded it so will re-listen to all songs.

Throughout the 1970s, Chuck Mangione was a celebrity. His purposely lightweight music was melodic pop that was upbeat, optimistic, and sometimes uplifting. Mangione's records were big sellers yet few of his fans from the era knew that his original goal was to be a bebopper. His father had often taken Chuck and his older brother Gap (a keyboardist) out to see jazz concerts, and Dizzy Gillespie was a family friend. While Chuck studied at the Eastman School, the two Mangiones co-led a bop quintet called...
