Album Review
Eliza Gilkyson counts herself among the cadre of contemporary singer/songwriters who mix thoughtful lyrics and folk roots to create a heady combination of poetry and music. Her vocal style, a quiet whisper with a gritty edge, adds a bit of depth to her musical vision, while her revolving door of musicians on Land of Milk and Honey lays down a relaxed foundation. Gilkyson, like other musical poets in the post-9/11 world, has serious things on her mind, and it's hard to imagine that a title like Land of Milk and Honey is meant to be read straight. "Hiway 9" gives the album an ominous start, with elliptical references to the Middle East, oil, and tax dollars going to God knows where. Unlike a number of left-leaning songwriters, Gilkyson seems content to never quite spell out what she means. "Wonderland," a tryst without commitment, seems equally dark on the surface, and Gilkyson's vocal recalls Lucinda Williams' carnal confessions on Essence. The difference, though, is that "Wonderland"'s rhythm is infectious, and the band takes the song at such an upbeat pace that a tryst, while not love, is not bad. Gilkyson's fans will find Land of Milk and Honey another solid effort by one sharp and incisive writer with a distinct voice. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., Rovi

Wiser because of Eliza
For my money, and I mean this literally, since I have bought everything of hers I can get my hands on, Eliza Gilkyson is one of the best singer-songwriters alive. I want everyone to hear her music. This CD might be her best. Her songs wrench emotion from the depths, and she succeeds in reaching the same depths in the listener that she apparently reaches in herself as she writes. The songs are more political on this CD than on past CDs. If you are four-square behind Bush and the boys, you might not be able to get past that, but if you are already in her political camp or if you CAN look past that, you can appreciate some of the most soulful and haunting music available. I'm not really prepared to write about songs in detail, but I wanted like everything to tell music lovers about Eliza, and when iTunes launched a review system, I wanted to speak up.
land of milk and honey
i found out about eliza gilkyson because my mom copped the CD at a mary chapin carpenter show. honestly, i wasn't expecting it to be any good, but i heard it in her car, borrowed it, and realized how great she is. dark side of town is a great song about addiction and recovery on multiple levels. the ballad of yvonne johnson is intense and brutally honest. and wonderland is just a great song, it's catchy and meaningful. there's only maybe two tracks that didn't stand out, i would give this album 4 and half stars if i could. either way i am going to be getting some more of her stuff.
Lots of stuff said if you know how to listen.
Got it when I read the title of the lead song, Hiway 9. Vaguely reminiscent of another Hiway 9 that has been in my life for over 40 years. I was on the eastern end of it and once halfway down it but never to the western end. Watched a right smart bunch of big trucks rollin' down Hiway 9 with the same destiny: Destruction... Fine piece of work. Fine peace of work, too...
