Album Review

The Land of Rape and Honey represented Ministry's stylistic breakthrough, combining assaultive percussion, samples, synths, and (sometimes) crunching guitars with distorted, barking vocals. For all the emphasis on the group's metal/industrial fusion, it's really only the first three (and best) tracks on Rape and Honey — "Stigmata," "The Missing," and "Deity" — that employ guitars extensively. The remainder of the album merely suggests heavy metal aggression through its electronic and sampled elements; it is far more industrial in feel, even though it's just as dark. Ministry was the industrial band that, more than any other, appealed to metal fans, and it was The Land of Rape and Honey that began to lay claim to that status.

Ministry gets in the game

Before LORH, Ministry hardly displayed an agressive side. With the lackluster With Sympathy and club-favorite Twitch in the mix, no one could have ever expected Ministry to be releasing abbrasive heavy industrial metal like this, no one expected just about anyone to. It wasnt trash and it wasnt power metal. It was something new. I happened to stumble upon ministry in a one sentence expo of gothic music and mention on the show Malcom and the Middle. I picked up animositisomina out of chance and was hookd, after reading several reviews about ministrys collection and back cataloge I decided upon getting The Land of Rape and Honey, I didnt realize at frst what I had, I just accepted it as a cd that was loud and heavy, time passed I didnt listen to the cd too much, I liked the tittle track and didnt really appreciate the rest of the album. I realize now what a mistake it was to just file this away. The opening track is very killer, it hits you hard with simple yet moving beats, one of the best songs ministry has ever done in my opinion. The next track takes things up a notch in abbrasivness with militaristic repetition killer riffs and a whole load of aggression. Deity is a little different displaying a little bit more of the bands dance side, but still quite aggressive and good to get in the pit to. Golden Dawn slows things down a bit, a little precursser to the future song Scarecrow, we get kinda a hint of hte country side of ministry with this track. Destruction starts kicking the gears of agression back in tune, the beats in this are funky with DESTROY repetting itself over and over, trully an industrial masterpiece. Hizbolla, one that has come to be a favorite of any persons Ive had listen to, is very prog-industrial esque, its very unique and almost sounds like it should be in a command and conquer game. The title track hits us full force next, filled with beats that could accompany the amry of satan himself, very brash and hars. You know what you are is one of the weaker tracks, still very good however...a little slow though, the next 3 tracks slowly bring the album to a close, but it holds the gem Flashback which is trully a classic in its own right.

Headed in wrong direction

I know I'm going to take flack for this given the other reviews here but, after becoming a Ministry fan following the release of the innovative "With Sympathy" and absolute masterpiece "Twitch," I was disappointed, yes, disappointed with this LP and began heading instead towards the Front 242 bin. Ministry fans seemed divided into two camps: those who think this is their first "real" work, and those who stopped buying their music after its release. Admittedly, there are signs of greatness here, such as the incomparable "Hizbollah" which would have fit nicely on Twitch. Other than that, I just don't get the sound, which makes me want to throw rocks at passing vehicles or jump from tall bridges (not a good idea, trust me). Obviously many others relate to it, and to each his own path. If contemplating a purchase, I recommend asking yourself this: do you prefer the late 1980's musical path leading to the aggressive industrial-metal sound? or path that led to electronic body music, acid house, and modern techno? If the former, this is for you; ignore this review. If the later, then I recommend Twitch.

Best industrial album ever

Not only is this Ministry's greatest it is simply the definition of "industrial music". A must have. If you can only download one song this year make sure it is "Stigmata".

That's not to say Ministry had a commercial or generally accessible sound: they were unremittingly intense, abrasive, pounding, and repetitive, and not always guitar-oriented...
