Album Review
Star pianist Lang Lang joins star conductor Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater to perform two star-making works of the piano and orchestra repertoire. Both works contain themes that are very familiar to many. The third movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 contains the "Full Moon and Empty Arms" theme, while the Rhapsody has the romantic 18th variation that is frequently heard in film soundtracks. The real attraction here, however, is the combination of two spectacular musicians who each have their own following and their own distinct style of interpretation. Lang Lang is known for being highly individual and subjective, and Gergiev is known for his attention to detail and the vitality of his readings. The resulting combination here is guaranteed to be unique and, at times, surprising., Rovi

A remarkable, one-of-a kind performance
I think all of us who go to live theater performances -- be it a play, musical or concert -- hope each time we go that we may get to experience a magic moment -- that moment when the performance moves or enlightens or thrills us unexpectedly. And we go knowing that we will be lucky to experience that kind of moment once in every dozen performances we attend. Telarc captured one of those moments in this recording of a live performance at the London Proms. Lang Lang, who at the time this recording was made was a relative unknown, took the Proms by storm with an astonishing, uplifting, definitive performance of Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto. Both the performance and the recording are remarkable achievements, and an absolute must-have for any lover of piano concertos. Telarc not only captured the performance, they also captured (and to their credit, included in the recording) the astonished reaction of the London audience at the end, who rose to their feet as one and delivered a thunderous, shouting ovation -- and the first time you hear this recording, you will want to join them. Bravo, Lang Lang. Bravo, Telarc.
Get it while you can
This is a superlative recording by one of the world's truly great orchestras, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, led by one of the world's truly great maestros, Yuri Temirkanov, at the start of the dazzling career of one of the world's most impressive pianists, Lang Lang. Temirkanov gave this young star his start, conducting LL's Carnegie Hall debut and launching his carrer while the 16 year-old was still a student at Curtis in Philly. It is a wonderful collaboration and worthy of any serious collection. It won't always be in print - but then, might always be available on iTunes... in any case, get it while you can.
LANG LANG: Rachmaninov #3, etc.
It helps to have a great artist playing any instrument in an album, however, TELARC, which is a pioneer in digital music just makes whoever is playing sound that much greater. Despite what you may think of Lang Lang, the production, if TELARC, seems to make any album that much better. Beit known that Lang Lang is very talented, it certainly helps make this album worth while.
