iTunes Review

Putting out music since 1999, MC Lars is often cited as a fixture in the "nerdcore" subgenre, due largely to his hyper-literate yet comedic verses, distinct white-guy flow, conceptual videos, and spastic laptop-heavy production. Over the years, he's released six albums, appeared (as himself) in several indie movies, and worked with everyone from Weird Al to The Donnas to Nas to Cobra Starship. Though he sometimes fuses punk rock into his songs (and especially live shows), Lars Attacks! finds him going back to his original vibe of old-school, simple beats and basic keys. Like his contemporaries MC Frontalot and MC Chris, he boasts a loyal fan following, though it's unlikely you'll hear him on commercial radio anytime soon. Collaborations here feature KRS-One ("The Gospel of Hip Hop"), Sage Francis ("Art of Darkness"), and Mac Lethal ("The Giving Tree"), while standout selections include "Venomous Box Jellyfish," "Francis Bacon Slashed the Canvas," and "Summer Camp Love (Is So in Tents)."

Lars Attacks!!!

MC Lars is the F***ing man
FYP

Haven't listened to it yet but....

Have never been disappointed by MC Lars... I love every other album so I figured this one would be just as epic!

ehhh

First off, I really enjoy a lot of MC Lars' music. With this album it seems as though Lars' new found enthusiasm for his faith and wanting to share said faith has resulted in him putting out a couple crap tracks on this album. Tracks like "Judas Priest", "Francis Bacon Slashed the Canvas", and "Super Scope" tend to feel forced and lack the fun and upbeat energy of a lot of Lars' music. There are some great tracks like "How to Be an Indie Rapper", "The Giving Tree", and "Annabel Lee R.I.P." that carry on a lot that great MC Lars energy that I enjoyed on his previous albums. The rest of the album just feels a little flat. I enjoyed his free mix tape "indie Rocket Science" much more. In short, stream it before you buy it.

Biography

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

MC Lars (real name: Andrew Nielsen) began making hip-hop-based tapes while still a kid, but was sidetracked from rap by such traditionally important issues to teenagers as playing guitar in a punk band and getting accepted to a college. Nielsen went to Stanford, and then did an exchange stint at Oxford, but all the while he was fiddling with desktop productions and developing his quirky, pop culture-savvy style. Boisterous live gigs and word of mouth built buzz for Lars' home studio raps (influences:...
