iTunes Review
Back in the mid-'00s, Lupe Fiasco struck a nerve with his fashion-forward style, matched with cheeky verses and ear-tickling, loop-driven productions, which endeared him to fans and critics alike. Lasers (an acronym for Love Always Shines Everytime Remember 2 Smile) marks his 2011 return. Straight off the bat, it's clear that Lupe has no intentions keeping his original, underground-centric fan base, as he employs a lot more singing, radio-ready choruses, and a heavy, electro-pop influence on his tracks. The best joints here are the string-laced, Afro-centric anthem "All Black Everything," ridiculously catchy "Coming Up" featuring MDMA, and "Words I Never Said" with Skylar Grey. Other guests include John Legend, Trey Songz, and Matt Mahaffey.

Lupe Fiasco - Lasers
It’s finally here…LASERS! Being delayed for three years due to mishaps with his record label and hard emotional times, LASERS finally sees the light of day. For me personally, the album was well worth the wait…but isn’t exactly what I expected to here. Some songs on here you can tell that the label had a lot of control over, like I Don’t Wanna Care, Out of my Head, and Break the Chain. All of good songs, but defiantly not what you would want from Lupe. Personally, I don’t mind them, but I can already tell this album is going to get a lot of hate for its more mainstream sound. But please, if you are satisfied with the albums sound, don’t blame Lupe. Blame Atlantic records, which kept the album on hold because of its “lack of singles to play on the radio.” They are the reason that a lot of the songs are not what you would expect from Lupe. But that doesn’t mean that the album is bad, there are many songs that shine through the dark cloud cast by Atlantic. Songs such as The Show Goes On, Words I never Said, and All Black Everything still show what you would want from Lupe, and hope for a better future, and a better label.
Letting Go (feat. Sarah Green)- 9/10 Out of all the anticipation, I will admit the opening track made me cry. Great track with a notable beat, but the after a few listens the auto-tune just didn’t make it seem like a Lupe track. Very 808s & Heartbreak-like track but still a very great opener.
Words I Never Said (feat. Skyler Grey)- 10/10 This is one of the albums top moments. The beat is spectacular and the chorus is beautiful. But none of that compares to Lupe’s controversial lyrics, telling the people to ask questions and stop living in fear, addressing topics such as corrupt government, racism, and 9/11. Very revolutionary track and one of the best on the album
‘Till I Get There- 9/10 Piano led beat and very catchy track. Personally, I love this track, very optimistic and thought provoking, but I have a feeling some will not like it for whatever reason. This will end up being the most under-rated song of the most over-rated.
I Don’t Wanna Care Right Now (feat. MDMA)- 7.5/10 The first track featuring MDMA, this is a very funky and futuristic track. I have no doubt this will do well commercially, but it just isn’t a Lupe song…it’s too dance-happy.
Out of My Head (feat. Trey Songz)- 7.5/10 Great flow from Lupe and very catchy hook from Trey. But I still find this another annoying dance hit forced by the record label. Still, it is about every woman is beautiful, something you really don’t hear in rap music anymore.
The Show Goes On- 10/10 Hopefully everyone knows this one. The albums first single and a sample of Modest Mouse Float On, this track is amazing! The lyrics are so uplifting and the chorus is truly spectacular. One of my personal favorites and some of Lupe’s best work.
Beautiful Lasers (Two Ways) [feat. MDMA]- 10/10 Words cannot express my love for this song. I heard a snippet way back and have been so anxious to hear the full song since. It did not disappoint. The MDMA chorus brought me to tears but Lupe’s incredible verses made me cry completely. This is some of Lupe’s most emotional work for he wrote this song while contemplating suicide, and the result was this piece of beauty, this kind of music saves lives.
Coming Up (feat. MDMA)- 7/10 Very upbeat, piano based track, but nothing that really stands out. Another commercial track that I don’t really care for.
State Run Radio (feat. Matt Mahaffey)- 8.5/10 another political track which ranges from politics to mostly the commerciality and glamorization of the media today. Lupe often compares a woman to the radio, which keeps playing the same thing again and again when good quality is not being heard. Great message but the hook is pretty annoying.
Break the Chain (feat. Eric Turner & Sway)- 7/10 Nice flow from Lupe and catchy hook. Not really feeling the verse from Sway at all and the track its self is very annoying but it did sound very good hearing it live.
All Black Everything- 10/10 Spectacular song with some of the better lyrics and one of Lupe’s personal favorites. I know it’s going to be underrated but I know true Lupe lyrics will realize that genius of this song. It suggests if history changed and MLK were still alive and 50 cent was white. Both meaningful and humorous!
Never Forget You (feat. John Legend)- 9.5/10 Great, reflective song with a nice hook from John but even better rap from Lupe. Dedicated to his passed father, some of Lupe’s most personal lyrics.
Everybody buy this album in support of the most underrated rapper of our time and in hopes of a better future where Lupe isn’t so pressured to dumb it down and can make his own music freely. Though this album will get mixed reviews, personally I have no problem with most of the tracks and loved the album. Love Always Shines Everytime Remember 2 Smile! Superb job Lupe and hopefully Food & Liquor 2 will be released by the end of the year! Shout outs to all the lasers out there!
Mindblowing
Lupe's done it again. The most real rapper in the game today has given us another mind-blowing lyrical album.AMAZING
Thank you for real hip-hop
Man, Lupe never disappoints. His lyrics are on point. His flow kills any track he blesses with it. And he creates real hip-hop with a purpose other than talking about strippers and weed. Don't get me wrong, guys like Wiz and Flocka are doin their thing, and I'm a fan for sure. But there is somethin about a lyrical masterpiece combined with some of the best producing I have ever heard that make Lupe one of the best in the game today. Two words. Thank you.
