Album Review
Latin Soul Syndicate features San Franciscans Mark Pistel, Happy Sanchez, and Karl Perazzo. With backgrounds in groups as varied as Consolidated and Santana, it's not surprising that the Soul Syndicate's self-titled LoveCat Music debut is a bit schizophrenic. After launching with the electrified Latin grooves and hip-hop flow of their theme song, the Syndicate crosses a Santana-style beat with sample drop-ins and instrumental programming for "Frida Kahlo," turns toward a clubby, updated disco sound for "Together Like 123" (together with another rap from Invisible Man), and makes "Narco Trafico" a Spanish-language Heat Wave guided by horn breaks and traditionally organic percussion. Other highlights of the album include "Cuando," with female vocals and guest guitar from Chuck Prophet, as well as the laconic surf guitar influence in "Baila Mi Changuito." Latin Soul Syndicate isn't the most resonant of albums — it feels a bit packaged at times, like it was designed with licensing in mind. But it moves along well, and will offer fans of a more modern, electronicized Latin sound and plenty of groove.
Customer Reviews
best Latin debut CD of all time
wow, i just got this CD and i have been listening to it non stop. The LSS feels like a big musical gang, and different members step out on different songs. There are fresh new sounds on Frida Kahlo (aka Mamasita), old school funk on In My '64, and reggae on Narco Trafico (co-written by Jonathan Richman). My fave is Together Like 123, with a killer rap.
Together Like 1 2 3
