Album Review
Released in 1996, this CD definitively answers a question that has occasionally plagued the Cowboy Junkies: yes, they sound good, but can they rock? Though still laden with the melancholia that has marked previous efforts, this CD is sonically dense, guitar-drenched, and good at high-volume levels. Margo Timmins' voice has never been more expressive, and the lyrics shimmer with intensity. Although the band has occasionally touched on quiet moments reminiscent of fellow Canadian Neil Young, little they have done before this album approached the emotive wail of his louder efforts. The Cowboy Junkies have proven their versatility while retaining their unique sound.

Dive Into The Deep End
Everything that comes before and after in the Cowboy Junkies catalog is perfectly realized on this landmark album. The thick humidity of Athens, GA (where they recorded) is seeping out of the low end of the bass lines and Margo's haunting voice is soaked in the weight of experience. After completely losing oneself in the perfectly crafted lyrics, other beautiful colors appear including the percussion. From the tightest pocket on "A Common Disaster" to the understated flow of "Angel Mine", the drums perfectly match the mood and further reveal a band in full control of their art.
A Must Have!
I truly believe this is one of the most amazing recordings I've ever heard. This is a must have for the collection, and I agree that it could be the best CD the Junkies have ever released. If I'm only able to keep 3 CDs ever, this is one. Common Disaster almost got me a speeding ticket, Angle Mine inspired me to learn how to play the guitar, Hold On To Me is a touching love song, and Something More Besides You hooks you on the CD from the start. Oh, and the other songs on here are also incredible. Thank you Junkies for a life-touching CD.
Signature Junkies
Although this could be debated, I feel strongly that track for track, this is by far their best work. The opening track, accented ever so slightly by Michael Timmons distorted guitar, sets the mood for an album that spans the myriad of human emotions. This album also futures what I consider to be one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, "Angel Mine". Sit back, turn it up, and enjoy.
