iTunes Review
Throughout her long career with Throwing Muses, 50 Ft. Wave and as a solo performer, Kristin Hersh has crafted a catalog that’s equal parts avant-garde and alternative pop. You can’t understand her quickly. She subverts pop conventions with subtle movements, using her stream-of-consciousness to engineer both lyrical and musical lines that translate as journeys into a surreal world with no real beginning, middle or end. Learn to Sing Like A Star, self-produced with engineers Trina Shoemaker and Steve Rizzo, and musically accompanied by Muses drummer David Marcizo and The McCarricks string section, is another punk-instigated burst of psychedelia. True to her conflicting nature, Hersh is too prickly for the sweet sun-dappled haze of her ‘60s influences and too elusive and contemplative for her punk roots. This leaves her in an intriguing musical no-man’s land. Is she the gravelly blues shouter of “Under the Gun?” The slightly caustic yet pastoral songwriter behind “Ice?” These stylistic jumps are accompanied by adventurous sonic touches, her guitars ranging from ruddy acoustics to haunting tremolo-ed electrics with the string orchestration deepening the drama throughout. Enjoyably weird.

This 'Star' Is Brilliant
On her first album since 2003’s The Grotto (50 Foot Wave aside), Kristin Hersh returns with what is perhaps her most accessible solo album yet. Her voice is one of the most distinguishable in the business and her unique songwriting is as sharp and engaging as ever. One notable standout (and there are many) is the track, ‘The Thin Man,’ which finds Hersh using a steady tempo of guitar and cello and the low thumping of drums as an intriguing backdrop to her incredible lyrics. The song itself is unlike anything else.
Alt-Rock Renaissance Woman
This is Kristin returned to pre-50 Ft. Wave, pre-solo career form. It could be another Throwing Muses album, with the undeniable depth of her hooks. Her voice has changed since those days, becoming even more haunted and showing its noble vintage. Her work, like life, is difficult to describe in a less-than-6,000-character online review. If you liked anything Kristin Hersh or her multifaceted music career have put out in the past, it is worth giving this one a listen.
One of the only artists who can REALLY bring the 'grunge' element back...
All these newer artists who are trying to pull the 'grunge' and 80 and 90's rock music back in, cannot possibly succeed like Kristin Hersh and other rock musicians can. Grunge and old-school rock can never be as original as when it first came out. This album is one of the best of 2007! And this underappreciated rock musician returns with one of her best! Kristin is one of the best female musicians out there!
