Album Review

Initially conceived as the sophomore solo album by singer/songwriter John Wozniak, Marcy Playground's fourth album, Leaving Wonderland...In a Fit of Rage, never quite shakes the feeling of being the work of one man: acoustic guitars outweigh the electrics and a hazy spirit of eclecticism hangs over the album, as do circular Lennon-esque psychedelic melodies, all fueling a feeling of introspection. This means Leaving Wonderland sounds quite a bit different than its loud, grungy predecessor, MP3, not to mention Marcy Playground's eponymous 1997 debut, but its weathered, worn sounds feel appropriate for the band 12 years on from "Sex and Candy." Elements of that early version of the band can be heard here, largely in Wozniak's facility with a hook — best heard on the lightly propulsive "Star Baby" — and also how the group can occasionally grind out some noise. But this isn't about pop or rock; it's a nicely inward-looking collection of adult rock. It does feel a bit like a solo album, but it's better that it's released under the group's name, because it deserves to be heard by a wider audience as it proves that there's more to Marcy Playground and Wozniak than one grunge-era hit.

A good album leads to "Good Times".

After a few long years since the "MP3" album, Marcy Playground finally released their long-waited "Leaving Wonderland... In a Fit of Rage" When I first heard this, I was skeptical to listen to it only because of their last album, "MP3". Don't get me wrong, it was a good album, but it just wasn't the full style of what Marcy Playground is. When I finished listening to the new one, I put it on repeat. I am very impressed by the pure, clean style that makes M.P. From Dylan Keefe's smooth bass rhythms to John Wozniaks' folk/rock sound, it greatly makes up for the wait. If you are a fan of Marcy Playground, then you should definetly give these songs a listen to. So pop the music in, blaze one, and enjoy the ride.

Another great album from Marcy. This band is not appreciated enough.

Missed them

Great new album. Been waiting for some new MP for a while and I'm glad they are still putting out quality stuff that helps melt the jaded edge off of life.

Although the members of Marcy Playground met in New York City during the mid-'90s, both singer/guitarist John Wozniak and bassist Dylan Keefe originally hailed from Minneapolis, and drummer Dan Rieser grew up in Ohio. The group took its name from the Marcy Open School, an experimental elementary school that Wozniak attended in the late '70s. Wozniak was intimidated by a few other students during his time at Marcy Open, and he ultimately refused to join his peers on the school's playground during...
