Carlos, sadly, not everyone is hip to the genius that is Tom Vek.

Actually, I'm amazed that we--The States--got the album this quick. I wasn't expecting to find it here when I checked. I remember when I first heard 'We Have Sound, I didn't become obessed with the album until maybe seven months after I got it.

Tom Vek pulled everyone back in with 'World of Doubt' and 'A Chore', two wonderfully addicting songs--much like he did with 'I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes' and 'C-C Set the Fire In Me'. I'm thinking maybe the same pattern will follow. Maybe after a few good listens, I'll become be obsessed once again.

There are some "at first listen" goodies peppered about on this album, but I'm sure the rest will have to grow on me. If nothing else, one thing you should appreciate is the fact that no song on this album is the same. That true experimental feel Tom is known for (well, what I know him for) is very pronounced on this album and those enigmatic lyrics to go with the funky sounds...he's still got it =]

Solid production with many interesting qualities

Can't believe there are no reviews on this Tom Vek album so far. I am only familiar with a previous track of his called 'If You Want', which has been on random rotation on my itunes for years now. It's good enough for me to be curious what a new release of his might sound like.
These guys are pretty cool. Pretty catchy and different. Although their sound is not at all mainstream, they should definitely be more popular. There are elements and effects in the production that brighten up his somewhat dry vocals. At times, maybe hints of Cake... but otherwise pretty original stuff. Don't like the album cover art though-- It looks like it was done in less than 10 minutes. Other than that, keep writing interesting songs.

Welcome back Tom

It's been a long 5+ years. I was beginning to lose hope we'd ever see this record. Right now, my 5 start rating is mostly based on this record's existence ;-)

Reviewing after just the first listen, but so far my impression is that this is significantly less poppy then 'We Have Sound', which is not necessarily good or bad. I look forward to spending some more time with this record.

Biography

Born: London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

London's eclectic one-man band Tom Vek combines electronic music with indie rock, punk with dance, and influences like new wave and garage (and also made most of his early recordings in his parents' garage, too). However, as a teen in the mid-'90s, Vek was inspired by grunge and began making rock along the lines of Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam; before that, he backed his guitarist father on bass and drums in their practice space/garage. When his family acquired a reel-to-reel tape recorder when...
