Album Review

Inevitably, any genre of music will have its traditionalists and its innovators. Irish/Celtic music is no different—there are still plenty of Irish artists who play traditional jigs, reels and airs the way their great grandparents played them, and there are others who are committed to forging ahead and pointing Irish/Celtic music in new directions. One such Celtic band is Kíla, whose Lemonade and Buns combines Irish/Celtic music with elements of African, Middle Eastern and East European music. While Kíla essentially comes from the Irish school of Celtic music (as opposed to the Scottish or Breton schools), this CD is hardly oblivious to the Celtic sounds of Scotland. And much to its credit, Kíla makes such experimentation sound organic and logical rather than unnatural or forced. There's a definite freshness to Lemonade and Buns, which won't appeal to Celtic purists but is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who is seeking something fresh and challenging from Celtic music.

Burns?! It's BUNS!!!

iTunes staff: you need to do your own copy editing. Besides, Burns are not at all pleasant to have with Lemonade; Buns, on the other hand, are ... particularly what Kila's serving. This album is far more experimental than their previous work and it sets the stage for what the band has been doing since its release. In both the instrumental and vocal tracks the range of their experiments gives the whole collection a broad style and texture that's fresh and appealing. My favorite Kila song is on this disc -- Rachel's Reel. Eoin Dillon shows here best of all just how beautifully the Uileann pipes can be played. I think fans of Irish music will also find that this piece is about as "traditional" and "modern" as one Irish song can be. Lemonade and BUNS is an interesting place in Kila's development. Looking back, you can see how they progressed from their earlier work to reach where they are in this album -- really defining their own sound. You can also see where they're headed and how Luna Park, Kila & Oki and their brand new album Gambler's Ballet (when is it coming to iTunes?!?!?) came to be.

Fantastic!

I found this CD at a second hand store a few years ago. What a gem in the rough! If you dig Celtic/World music, or if you hunger for something completely off the radar, pick this album up. I promise it will not dissapoint. Let me post a warning...do not buy it if you are not ready to listen to something distinctly different. My wife rolls her eyes when I put it on. It is definately not baby-making music, so consider yourself forewarned! Good on ya iTunes for bringing their discography to your library. 5 stars!

"Lemonade and Buns", not "Burns"!

This album is awesome! Especially "Andy's Bar", great to dance to.

Celtic pop group Kila formed in Dublin in 1987, originally comprised of vocalist/bodhrán player Rónán Ó Snodaigh, his multi-instrumentalist brother Rossa, and uilleann piper Eoin Dillon. The schoolmates soon welcomed another Ó Snodaigh sibling, flutist Colm, and began busking throughout the Dublin area; a series of other members passed through Kila's ranks before the lineup finally solidified with the additions of fiddler Dee Armstrong, guitarist Lance Hogan, and his bassist brother, Brian.
