Album Review

"Equally influenced by Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Muse, and Coldplay." That, my friends, is a description that you could foist upon what seems like countless up and coming rock bands circa the early 21st century. And in 2005, another act that fits under this stylistic umbrella appeared on the scene, A'tris. Hailing from Boston, MA, the quartet issued their third release overall in 2008, Lensing, an album that sees A'tris continuing merrily on their fractured alt-pop path. Keep in mind what the aforementioned bands sound like, and you'll know what lays in store for you throughout Lensing — chiming guitars, standing atop a mountain top wailing vocals, anthemic choruses, artsy fartsy lyrics/song titles, etc. The A'tris chaps certainly have it all down pat, especially as evidenced by such ditties as "Selling Oxygen" and "Automatic Doors," among others. Picture if Radiohead continued on a more mainstream path after OK Computer — instead of getting all schizophrenic on us — and it might have sounded an awful lot like A'tris' Lensing.

This generations Radiohead

With their latest full-length release, a'tris provides an almost perfect blend of experimentation and formulation. a’tris demonstrates instrumental skill, clever programming, a taste for cinematic grandeur and a progressive sensibility, orchestral overtones, and a frontman with a pure, soaring voice. To quote another review 'Many of these songs –like the gorgeous “Dark Lotus” – are built around hypnotic near-classical piano patterns and shuffling machine percussion. The ballads on Lensing are as singular as they are magisterial: “Selling Oxygen”, another standout cut, marries a dizzy, challenging verse to a powerful and immediate chorus. But pretty is not all they do – guitarist Ben Azar can crunch with the best of them, and much of the programmed instrumentation is delightfully dirty and sonically edgy.'

Incredible!

I bought this album the other day after hearing a few clips a friend had passed along to me. I have found it almost impossible to stop listening to it! The music on this album is REAL. Their sound is so unique, yet so familliar. The music is PURE and organic. Each song has its own style and groove to it, you can't help but want to sing along. This is one of those CDs that you pop into the player and hit repeat, never wanting to skip a track. Mason, the lead singer, has an almost haunting voice. His accent and the way he pronounces his words when he sings, adds a texture to the song that make them so hard to resist. The deep beats of the bass hook you into the songs and threaten to not let you go. All in all, I'd say a'tris really knows how to put together a fantastic album.

Good stuff

good guys, good music, great live performers...their video for automatic doors is great professionally done stuff. Hope they do well and go far!
