How Could I Rate it Less?
this has got to be the best version of Les Miserables i have ever heard. each song has individuality not often shown in other versions, including the Original Broadway. for one thing, Javert actually sounds like he has a passion for the law, not just arresting innocent men. i have heard some say that he cannot carry a tune. before you listen to that ridiculous comment, listen to "Stars." have you heard Fantine's voice in this version? she doesn't sound old, ugly, and whiny as is often the case. she sounds like she has a personality and has been hurt by the world. Young Cosette and Gavroche are both incredible, especially for their age. Valjean is at least as good as the other Valjeans, although he alone does not stand out from other recordings. the Thenardiers have a perfect blend between cruelty, greed, and sneakiness. i honestly hate Thenardier's voice in every other version. and then there's Eponine. good greif, where to begin! in every other soundtrack i've heard, she sounds like a whiny little brat who misses the times when she was little and pampered before the Thenardiers lost their inn. she usually seems to only want Marius because he loves Cosette, and she feels he's her property. in the London recording, Eponine sounds the same way she is described: wretched yet beautiful. of course, i have to add something about Marius!! ahahhhh!!!!!!! Michael Ball is exceptional. that's all i can say about him. he sings with a passion and feeling that cannot be described, other than that he has GREAT talent. all of these singers are extraordinary, and i cant believe anyone would dislike this version! (not to mention the fact that it's the only version with "I Saw Him Once" included, don't ask me why.....it's such a great song when performed by a soprano who isn't painfully shrill...) from one who's actually read the unabridged book because of this soundtrack, this is the version that depicts most clearly the feelings which are so acurately described in the origional (unabridged) book.
Simply The Best!

Why didnt i know about this a long time ago?
I watched my best friend perform this at his school, and was truely touched. I dont know if you get out of it the same thing if you dont see it, but listening to it just keeps my memory fresh. Its so powerful. I'm obsessed with Eponine's character and was not impressed with Frances Ruffelle on the 30 second preview, but bought it anyway. Let's just say im ashamed I ever thought that. She is very powerful and conveys the emotion onto track very well. A must have for and Les Mis fan, or even those who are curious.
