18 years after their formation, Let the Dominoes Fall shows that Rancid’s expertise at communicating desperation and redemption remains its most precious natural resource. Rooted in punk and ska foundations, Rancid goes fast and furious on the Brett Gurewitz-produced Dominoes (only three songs break the three-minute mark). There are classic Rancid touchstones: hooligan chants, skavoovie goodness, swirling pit agitators, and huge guitars and vocal interplay between Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen. “East Bay Night” is a love letter to their Albany/Berkeley, CA home. They add some classic R&B in the mix with an appearance by Booker T. on Hammond organ for the Memphis-to-Jamaica rave-up “Up to No Good.” They take a Pete Seeger-like turn on the acoustic salute to a homecoming soldier, “Civilian Ways.” Let the Dominoes Fall shows Rancid’s depth and ambition as they approach their third decade together.

Could have been better

We've waited 6 years and many delays from Rancid to finally bring us new music but unfortunately, this isn’t their best effort. However, I understand it’s impossible to duplicate the epic album of “…And out Come the Wolves” or even “Rancid 2000”. Most of the songs are extremely short and most of their faster songs lack a good chorus. I hate to compare past albums but it seems like they tried to duplicate "...And out come the Wolves" mixed with a new sound. The iTunes bonus track is arguably their best song even though the chorus is pretty weak. Also, Matt Freeman needs to stop singing and stick to playing bass because he kills every song he is in. Overall, here are my song highlights: Good songs you should check out - Oil and Opium - Sounds like a song that could have been on "Rancid 2000" I Ain't Worried - Cool beat and I like the chorus how Armstrong "ain't worried about a god damn thing" Damnation - Sounds a lot like a “Ramones” song Locomotive - Sounds like vintage Rancid in the opener with Armstrong killing it on the guitar That's Just the Way it is Now - Sounds like "Hepcat" kind of ska. Has a great beat and I like the chorus Last One to Die - Probably the best chorus on the album, a song you can sing along to. Sounds like it could have been on “…And out Come the Wolves” Up to No Good - Another good ska song The Bravest Kids - I like the opening and chorus but the style of the verse could have been better You Want it, You Got It - Good song but way to short. I like how it switches verses between Lars and Tim but Matt Freeman should have stayed out The Decent - Lulu - would have been good if it had a chorus. New Orleans - I really have nothing good or bad to say about this Liberty and Freedom - Cool beat but just when you think it's going to break out in an anthem chorus "We will come...back some day", it just ends. However, the guitar sounds great on this song East Bay Night - The chorus is weak and the guitar sounds weak throughout the song until mid way after the second chorus it has a cool guitar sequence. Could have been a good song Dominoes Fall - The music is great but that stupid "no, no, no, na, na" part throughout the song kills it Outgunned - Kind of repetitive but the beat is cool and I like the chorus The Highway – nothing bad about it, just not feeling it Civilian Ways – see “The Highway” The Bad - This Place - Is it me or does it remind you a lot like "Let's Go"? Disconnected - Just not feeling it and once again Matt Freeman makes the song go from bad to worse Skull City - This really sounds like a "Transplants" B-side without the rapping of that other dude. It also has a psychedelic feel to it L.A. River - Cool rockabilly vibe to it but once again Matt Freeman sounds terrible as usual. And that "shimmy shimmy" crap he does during the chorus is really annoying and sounds really cheesy

They did get it right..

It's been about five years, but Rancid continues to use that great song writing recipe that Rancid fans are used to. I wasn't too excited about this album when I heard the single, but the album is actually pretty solid, with at least seven to eight really good songs. Check out tracks 3, 6, 11, 12, and 18. I've listened to this album once and I'm already singing along. They even put some of the Aggrolites flavor into a couple tunes. It's worth the $9.99

The last ones to die!

I have been a fan since 1994's "Let's Go". I was let down by 2003's "Indestructible" and the recent side projects, so I didn't have much faith that this album would be good. Wow was I wrong. Rancid are back to their roots; Catchy punk rock riffs and choruses, hardcore old school ska, and gravel throat vocals. Glad they stuck together after all these years and have gotten back to the true to heart punk rock that made me love them 15 years ago.
