Since retiring the Guided By Voices franchise, Robert Pollard has been even more prolific with solo albums and collaborations such as Circus Devils, Keane Brothers, Lifeguards and Boston Spaceships, his recording enterprise with the Decemberists’ John Moen and the Takeovers’ Chris Slusarenko. Let It Beard is unlike many of his post-GBV albums. Where those records have largely been concise and quick on the ears, Let It Beard is a 26-track, 70-minute opus. As always, the four Ps — power, pop, punk and prog — are in evidence. “Juggernaut vs. Monolith” may be a brief jag, but tracks such as “Make a Record For Lo-Life,” “Let More Light In the House” and “A Hair In Every Square Inch of the House” are fully worked-out tracks. Guests such as Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Colin Newman of Wire and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate add extra color and have apparently encouraged Pollard to bring his A-game.

Never doubt Bob, drunk uncle Bob. As truly transcendent as GBV was on the reunion tour, I can't wait for the Spaceships to land here in Chicago. Resurrected and it feels so good.

In Bob We Trust!!!

I double dog dare you to listen to this and tell me that Boston Spaceships isn't real. Well played guys!!! A gem for any lover of rock not just my fellow Bob lovin' ,B1000 quoting,Postal Blowfishing, Rockathoning,nerdlingers.

The best Boston Spaceships record by far

Just last week in a review I did for the Spaceships' second album, Planets Are Blasted, I said it was the best record they had made. But there was a caveat in there, too, because I knew this album was coming out this week...and this is possibly the best record that Bob Pollard and any of his cadre of musicians has made. Too many songs to cite particular favorites, but I'll say that if you're not completely hooked on it by the beginning of Tourist UFO, then maybe it's just not for you.

Bob's a hometown hero here in southwest Ohio, and I started seeing GBV shows in the Vampire on Titus/Bee Thousand era, so you may think I'm a little biased, but...seriously! This is a double-album opus; as important a statement to its intended audience as Zen Arcade and Exile on Main Street were, generations ago. It is the crunchy indie-rock equivalent of either of those, and musically, as good or better. Seriously. Pick up this album, if any of what I've said makes sense. You'll dig it.

After disbanding Guided by Voices late in 2004, the ever prolific and busy Robert Pollard worked on solo projects, set up his own Guided by Voices label, and nursed a few GBV odds and ends through the pipeline before starting a new band, Boston Spaceships, with Chris Slusarenko (the Takeovers, Sprinkler) and John Moen (the Decemberists, the Dharma Bums). Working Pollard's familiar but skewed take on past garage and pop styles, Boston Spaceships released Brown Submarine in 2008 and Planets Are Blasted...
