iTunes Review
Over the years Peter Case slowly but deliberately transformed from power-pop songwriter with strong Americana roots to a convincing elder acoustic bluesman. This quiet, elegant collection of wistful, bluesy acoustic story-songs features barebones playing and affecting sandpaper vocals (“Underneath the Stars,” “Ain’t Gonna Worry No More”) that support the strong, simple melodies. Case benefits from stripping songs to their barest essence. His 1993 release of traditional covers, Peter Case Sings Like Hell, packed a formidable, folk-blues punch and his 2007 release Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John (not a tribute to bluesman Sleepy John Estes though a spiritual connection is possible) evokes a similar solitary walk through Case’s past — this time with originals and one cover — where his guest musicians serve as ghosts along the road. Richard Thompson adds guitar and harmony vocal to “Every 24 Hours.” Duane Jarvis contributed guitar and percussion to “I’m Gonna Change My Ways.” Norm Hamlet adds pedal steel to the majestic album closer “That Soul Twist.” Timeless approach and results.

Let us Praise Sleepy John
I bought this CD after seeing Mr. Case at a dive in downtown San Francisco on a mid-August night. I am a 49 year old man that was blown away by Cases lyrics, presentation and guitar playing abilities. I haven't seen a rock-n-roll concert since Bruce Springsteen's "The River" tour and Peter matched or exceeded that concert. My apologies to the "Boss... but Case did captivate his audience and you could tell he has had much experience in life and in performing . And By the way... his new album has been in my car CD player ever since. Buy the CD .. you will be glad you did! J
This is so good it would wake Sleepy John Estes...
Peter Case is at his best on his latest effort. Favoring a stripped down sound throughout he gives us social invective(Million Dollar Bail) that refers to Phil Spector, straight ahead blues(Get Away blues) and a host of incredibly well crafted tunes that are infectiously melodic and edgy at the same time. Two songs, Ain't Gonna Worry no more and I'm gonna change my ways, are similarly titled to John Estes tunes (I ain't gonna worry no more and Everybody's out to make a change) although the similarity ends at the titles. Better hope he tours your town soon!
Sings Like... Heaven
They sell pre-broken-in jeans, why not new music that fits like you've had it in your head all your life? Well, that's where this Peter Case record hits me. It's familiarity in the BEST sense: the guitar, the melodies, the vocal yearning and tenderness, the storytelling, eye-for-detail-that-means-more-than-it-seems lyricism. It's all here. Welcome home, Peter. Hope you don't mind, but we'll be stayin' awhile...
