iTunes Review
The Oakland R&B trio Tony Toni Tone’s sound got quieter on House of Music, the follow-up to 1993’s multiplatinum Sons of Soul, as their homage-errific nods to influences were their most overt yet. Their party-hearty collaboration with DJ Quik, “Let’s Get Down,” featured an acoustic guitar as lead instrument, while the piano-laden “Lovin’ You” sounded perfect next to hushed Isley Brothers jams such as “Work to Do.” The Tonyies paid homage to the Stylistics, whose biggest hit had been “Betcha By Golly Wow,” with “Holy Smokes & Gee Whiz,” and grinningly nodded to Al Green’s Memphis classics on “Thinking of You.” Singer Raphael Saadiq (formerly Wiggins) also made his way into the Testifiers’ Hall of Fame with the seven-minute “Still a Man.” The group imploded after this set, but it’s some goodbye.

Brings Back Memories - Great Album
by Blazin413Simply put, a beautiful piece of work. Not a commericial success but artistically their highpoint. My college roommate had the CD back in '96 and I have missed it since graduation. So glad I re-purchased ... it brings back a ton of memories.
Without a doubt, this is a nod to soul music and all their influences. As someone else said, the album was able to give a nod to the greats (Al Green, Prince, Stylistics, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc.) while still being modern and fresh with a unique TTT stamp - they took ownership.
Standouts include Thinking of You, Til Last Summer, Lovin You, Holy Smokes and Gee Whiz, and Wild Child.
Go on this journey with TTT and you will find yourself going back again and again. And like me, 13 years later, again, and again, and again ...
Easily their best work
by TBouvI used to listen to this CD every day when it came out. I debated with my ex-girlfriend that there were no covers on this album. For those who think TTT should reunite, I say only for a concert. I don't think they can top this album.
Old School Update
by vroccoThis is simultaneously a celebration and an extension of various soul styles and pioneers, but it's also a sturdy summary of the group's versatility. "Thinking of You" is the supreme Al Green tribute, "Annie May" flatters Prince, and "Lovin' You" resembles After 7's "Ready or Not", but perhaps the strangest tip of the hat is the subtle interpolation of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the album's acoustic/hip-hop lead single "Let's Get Down". Rather than dwelling on their influences, T3 uses them as a springboard into unique creations like the orchestral and horn climax of "Wild Child", or the elegant balladry of "Let Me Know", and especially the quiet force of "Still a Man". "House of Music" captures the essence of many great stylistic predecessors and perfects the group's more sophisticated ambitions at the same time, making it the most triumphant, if not commercial, achievement of their career.
