iTunes Review

For their third studio album, Scotland’s Camera Obscura make heart-skipping pop music that’s often sad and down but never out. Tracyanne Campbell may like to get her melancholy mope on but she always does so with a twinkle in her eye and a deep-rooted belief that music can salvage, if not save, the romantic soul. “Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken” responds to Lloyd Cole’s question “Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?” with a fan’s swooning admiration. “I Need All the Friends I Can Get” turns cynical and brutally honest, telling off the very friends Campbell is trying to keep on her side. “Dory Previn” twists towards country, while “Country Mile” and “Tears For Affairs” stroll more down a light-hearted groove. With the help of producer Jari Haapalainen, a heavy, unrelenting sorrow expands the group’s musical attack to suggest they’ve fully digested the works of Jimmy Webb, Lee Hazlewood, and their personal promoters Belle and Sebastian to come up with their own winning combination.

If Albums Could Kill...

A few years ago, I discovered Camera Obscura when AllMusic.com cross-listed them with Belle & Sebastian. I figured I'd give them a shot...and behold, I ended up loving them even more than B&S. Indeed, there are similarities between the two (both being Scottish and 'twee'), but the differences are readily apparent. Actually, there are even more commonalities between Camera Obscura and Leslie Gore or Dusty Springfield (or any number of 60's pop chanteuses). Getting sucked in by the delightful meanderings of Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi and Underachievers Please Try Harder, I had high hopes for this album. Luckily, Camera Obscura continues to fulfill a fan's highest expectations! As pointed out by other reviews, the standout tracks are the immediately accessible "Lloyd..." and "If Looks Could Kill." Both tunes are upbeat and catchy for sure. Arguably, "Lloyd" is one of the best songs that Camera Obscura has ever recorded. By the way, the track is a response to a Lloyd Cole track that asks "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?" But, let's not overlook the songs that could easily fly under the radar, like "Country Mile," a heart-breaking number that yearns like a true country song should. And, even the title track can pull you into its dour grip, if you let it. Some of my personal favorites include "Come Back Margaret" and "I Need All the Friends I Can Get." If you're just discovering the wonder that is Camera Obscura, then "Let's Get Out of This Country" is a perfect starting point. You won't fully comprehend its pop power unless you listen to the album in its entirety on repeat several times (as also suggested). But, please don't forget to discover the previous works of this amazing band. There is nothing so gorgeous as the lilt of TracyAnne Campbell's voice or the beauty of the guitar strums, tamborine shimmers, and organ hums that comprise one of the best albums so far this year!

Oh so sweet.

This album is adorable. It makes me want to snuggle with a teddy bear or ride my bike in a park.

Lilting and Sad

i liked CO's last release "Underachievers Please Try Harder" well enough, but "Let's Get Out of This Country" is truly wonderful. it features wistful songs ("Razzle Dazzle Rose" with its longing trumpet solo) to upbeat 60's pop ("Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" with its cool church organ). other standouts include "If Looks Could Kill" - another foot-stomper - and the lovely, loungy "Tears for Affairs". there's a bit of Motown, Phil Spector, Burt Bacharach, and UK pop all over the place. one thing i truly love is that even when there's an infectiously danceable song, the lyrics are still quite sad. Camera Obscura really puts the two together well.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Scottish ensemble Camera Obscura formed in 1996, when vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, percussionist John Henderson, bassist Gavin Dunbar, and guitarist David Skirving began creating lush indie pop with orchestral flourishes and romantic lyrics. They went on to release a number of singles, one of which included contributions from Belle & Sebastian's Richard Colburn, whose band served as a stylistic touchstone for the young Camera Obscura. Three years after the band's first releases, Lee Thompson...
