iTunes Review
Letters In the Deep makes clear that Cadillac Sky’s ambitions run far beyond those of a conventional bluegrass band. The sheer ferocity of the combo’s musical attack sets them apart from their ‘grassy peers — but it’s their tradition-bending songwriting that truly makes them distinctive. A modern note of angst runs through semi-crazed numbers like “Trapped Under The Ice,” “Bathsheeba” and “3rd Degree,” brought to life by band leader Bryan Simpson’s feverish vocal delivery and manic mandolin strums. As a unit, Cadillac Sky combines delicate virtuosity with eruptions of energy worthy of the Pogues in their prime. Nods towards the Band and American Beauty-era Grateful Dead are evident in the mixture of melancholy and delight heard in “Hangman,” “Pitiful Waltz” and “Trash Bag.” The desolate “Hypocrite” takes the bluegrass penchant for lonesome sounds to shiver-inducing heights. Balancing these moody interludes are heartfelt numbers like “Human Cannonball” and “Tired Old Phrases.”
Customer Reviews
Rare gem
I am a fan of music in general, but haven't really been a bluegrass guy. Reading some of the negative reviews, I might have avoided this one based on what "bluegrass people" think of it.
I'm glad I didn't let it influence me. If this isn't "real bluegrass", then I am now a fan of whatever kind of music this is. It is OUTSTANDING. Maybe NOT being a bluegrass purist, I was able to listen without some kind of predetermined parameters.
All I can say is give it a try even if bluegrass isn't your thing. Their originality and great musicianship make this a music lovers rare find. I don't usually get this worked up over an "unknown", but this one has me hooked.
Um, what happened?
I have been a fan of Cadillac Sky since they came out with "Blind Man Walking." They were great on that album, and I have everything they have released since then; even the Talant Show album. I am so disappointed with these guys. With this album, what happened to the great instrumentation and tight vocals? I gave it three listen throughs just because I love these guys so much. Even still, i cannot get into it or even bring myself to hear it again. This album is a mess and an insult to anything that they have previously released.
Bummer!
Ya Ive followed them for awhile and I would agree they seem to be searching for there identity. They are no longer bluegrass, they have moved toward folk. Trying to be to artsy for my taste. :/
