iTunes Review
With Leveler, metalcore quintet August Burns Red further explore bonding their Christian faith to brutal onslaughts of metal thunder while retaining a dynamic and ferocious sound. What sets ABR apart from many of their contemporaries is the fact that they muse on their religion without proselytizing, allowing it to surface as a theme more than a focus without sacrificing any of their music’s heavy attack. “Empire” opens with subtly uplifting melodies rising from bludgeoning rhythms, fiery fretboard shredding and Jake Luhrs’ feral vocal howls sounding as monstrous as any black metal bands with theological differences. The following “Internal Cannon” boasts stuttered stop-and-go rhythms chugging along under soaring twin guitarmonies and an acoustic breakdown that seems to come out of nowhere — yet somehow, it fits the song quite well. Standout track “Salt & Light” best epitomizes the album’s tug-of-war between darkness and light. The deluxe edition boasts four bonus cuts including an all-acoustic instrumental take on “Internal Cannon” with flamenco flourishes and a piano-based instrumental version of “Pangea.”

THANK GOD!
They fixed the production quality!!! I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the 4 singles ABR released before leveler sounded like utter crap. Just terribly produced...didn't even sound like they mixed the tracks, let alone mastered them. I was so so so afraid the rest of the album would be as poorly produced as those singles, but THANK GOD the singles were only rough takes. All these songs are now back to the production quality I expect for a band of this caliber.
Now, the music...speechless. Yes, Messengers might have been the best album to ever happen to metal-core, but it's time to expand. Now after hearing Leveler, I might never go back to Constellations haha. Constellations now feels like ABR's experimental album...kinda testing the waters before diving headlong into what we now know, as LEVELER.
When i'm in the mood for some strait up metalcore, I will happily go back to Messangers once again. (it just never gets old!!:)
But Leveler is clearly the new face of August Burns Red, and I couldn't be happier about it.
Disappointment
While this album is admittedly far superior to most metal releases as of lately, it's a huge disappointment for me.
This album is full of unimaginative guitar parts, random, meaningless breakdowns, and sub-par lyrics. It lacks the brutality and technicality of Messengers and the melody and dynamics of Constellations. It sounds like a bunch of terrible songs they decided not to use for Constellations, seeing as the guitar tones and drumming patterns are nearly the exact same.
While this album isn't terrible, and has a few decent songs (Empire, Internal Cannon, Salt and Light) it's mostly a bland, uninspired, and unimaginative album. I simply expect more from this band. Looks as if I'm already waiting for another new album, and it's only been a few hours since this ones release. Looks as if Messengers and Constellations will have to tide me over til the release of their next album, just as they have been doing for the last two years.
Incredible
Im bias cause they really can do wrong in my eyes but if you like a message in ur music, creativity, taste, with power and movement, chocolate and vanilla, licorice and caramel kisses you'll love this album
