Life After God

Life After God

Best known for his work with Crown City Rockers (previously known as Mission:), as well as Electric (a.k.a. Electric Company) and Project Move, the Boston emcee Moe Pope has been doing his thing since the turn of the millennium, putting out high-quality hip-hop just under the radar. On Life After God, released through longtime Beantown boom-bap providers Brick Records, he connects with the relatively unknown producer Rain, who concocts a bevy of excellent sample-drenched tracks for Moe to shine on, overflowing with freaky loops, hearty drum breaks, slick cuts, and moody effects. Honestly, there's not a weak song here; the beats and rhymes play off one other perfectly, and the 15 joints here could easily be Exhibit A in disproving the notion that "all new rap music is garbage." Boston favorites EDO G and Reks appear on "City Lights" and "Foolish" respectively, while other highlights include the horn-laden "Godzilla," the flashback anthem "Rock Me, Pt. 1," and the frantic, piano-propelled "Bang Bang."
