Album Review
A difference from their last effort yet undeniably a-ha. This time, the Norse purveyors of quality pop have opted for a variety of producers, ranging from Stephen Hague to Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The album begins with a lush ballad — which is typical a-ha, pastoral with support orchestration — almost like a modern day Moody Blues. "You Wanted More" also follows this trait, only darker with spiky electronics. "Afternoon High" sketches out '70s pastel glory similar to what Tears for Fears were getting at with parts of the Seeds of Love album. There are shades of Minor Earth Major Sky in that they keep the sugary neigh pleasant ballads vein to full emotional effect on "Turn the Lights Down," "Time and Again," and like MEMS's Garbage homage "Sun Never Shone." "Cannot Hide" opts for a Jennifer Paige "Crush" vibe with George Harrison-style guitar, while "Forever Not Yours"' pleasant dramatism echoes Darren Hayes' recent Insatiable.

Brilliant!!!
This is definitely my favorite album from A-ha. For anyone who prefers something a little more modern and at times edgy, with a mature version of their earlier flavors and beats blended in, this album is it. Like tasting a fine wine, hearing this album is also to hear the bright culmination and apex of their entire lyrical and musical careers (in the US at least...check out their latest 'Analogue' on import). If you've only enjoyed their older material, this album will grow on you as well in a refreshing way. It will even play nicely in rotation after 'Scoundrel Days' or 'Hunting...'.
a-ha is getting better and better
I've been a fan since the 80s and this album is only to be topped by the analouge album which is (sadly) not available here. lifelines has intresting lyrics (i. e. oranges on appletrees, forever not yours) and the songs stick with you quickly....no, they do not all sound alike, quite the opposite actually. Great buy!

A gem lost in a river of dull pebbles. If you can only afford a few karats you might consider "Did Anyone Approach You", "A Little Bit", "Dragonfly", or the title song "Lifelines".
