Album Review
For someone who has had a prolific 15-year career as a producer, DJ, remixer, and composer, it's sure taken Tom Middleton a long time to come up with a solo album under his own name (the ones previously released under the pseudonyms AMBA, Cosmos, and Global Communication don't count, because those were all collaborations with Mark Pritchard). Lifetracks finds him working in a style that rather curiously fuses elements of ambient techno, prog rock, hip-hop, funk, and even classical impressionism in ways that are both immediately accessible and generally quite interesting. "Prana," the album's opening track, plays simultaneous homage to King Crimson and Steve Reich with its repeated and shifting guitar patterns; "Beginning of the Middle" is a bit jazzier, but never really gets off the ground. However, "Shinkansen" manages to be both gently pleasant and compellingly funky at the same time (a more difficult feat than you might imagine), and "Astral Projection" brings an element of trip-hop into the mix. Fans of the Orb, Brian Eno's non-ambient and ambient work, and Vangelis will all find plenty to enjoy here. Recommended.

Best Album of the Year
I have been waiting to hear Tom Middleton's solo album for years, and it's finally hear. He has been releasing these tracks here and there on compilations for nearly a decade, chronicling his life, but this is the first time they have been compiled on one cohesive album. A former member of the influential electronic band Global Communication, Tom has spent the last decade building a reputation as an eclectic DJ, a respected remixer, and a superb producer. The tracks on this album follow his more ambient approach, melody and rhythm combined with emotion. What results is a classic chillout record perfect for many occasions; kicking back on a lazy Sunday, passing time on a long trip, or setting the mood for a romantic evening. This album is the soundtrack of Tom's life, and it's a great one for the modern world as well.
a real beauty
I loved Global Communications. Debated buying this based on the 30 second snippets, decided yes, and was overwhelmingly satisfied with my puchase. This is an excellent album, a beautiful listen that's extremely engaging. You won't be disappointed. The 30 second snippets don't even give you a peek into the real depth here!
Very Strong
This is a very strong record, it's very Alive. I am very carerful about what I will put in my music collection, and I am a very criticial songwriter myself. I don't like listening to bands, I am more into artists, especially of the ambient - Electronic Genre (Takagi Masakatsu, Ulrich Schnauss, Ken Ishii, Joris Voorn) - I am impressed by the beauty of this record and Tom has found one other person on the planet who will ALWAYS look forward to his releases. Highlights on this record for me include 'Astral Projection', 'Shinkansen', and 'Moonbathing', but the whole record grew on me within a few listens. Great job Tom!
