Light in the Sky

I must respectfully disagree with an earlier review. First of all, Laurie has not left the group. Carolanne Solobello has. Secondly, Carolanne didn't sing high harmonies, but rather the low harmonies - the same range as Molly. While the CD is a little different in style from earlier releases, I found it excellent. All of the previous CD's have changed somewhat as the group evolved. Red Molly has made the change in artists work for them, playing to the strengths of their new member to great advantage. I love Carolanne's voice, but also love Molly's. Stylistically her vocals are best suited to exactly what this album offers us. She has a slightly huskier quality I find very appealing, and the group, as always, has created harmonies that are as tight as three coats of paint and as sweet and rich as blackstrap molasses. Laurie and Abbie both have lead parts on different cuts and I think the group, as they have done always, considers the song and it's sound over any other thing. I believe they've created a gorgeous, fun, coherent CD that will climb the charts for a long time to come, and I recommend it most highly!

Great as Always

This is a first rate record with all the trappings you'd expect from these wonderful women! I love it! As expected:" Incredibly well rehearsed and precise. The cover of "Your Long Journey", possibly my favorite song in the world, is an example of how they sing perfectly together. Spin that first.

Red Molly's "Light in the Sky"

I had the great fortune to see Red Molly perform (Blue Door) a month before their album dropped, where they performed many of the songs on this new album. The only thing missing from the album is the live energy, but the harmonies are just as tight and beautiful in both. This is the first Molly album to include Molly Venter who replaced Carolann Solebello in the group, and she makes a great addition to the already great group. I actually never saw them with Solebello, but Venter adds a great energy and plays a mean rhythm guitar, in addition, of course, to her great voice.
This album, I think, showcases all that Red Molly do so well. Their original tracks are great, including one by Molly, and two written by Abbie (though I would have liked to have had a few more from both). But they also have a great ability to take other good songs and make them their own. Three great examples from this album include the Tim O'Brien/Darrell Scott "Walk Beside Me," Dolly Parton "Do I ever Cross Your mind," and Mark Erelli's "Ghost." The Parton tune (besides reminding me of her great songwriting career) just keeps playing, and while this might be heresy to Red Molly, I almost like their version of "Ghost" better than the excellent version by Erelli.
I downloaded this album the first morning it was available, and it has been in constant rotation in our household. Buy the album, but do yourself a favor and catch these great singers/writers/performers on the road. You won't be disappointed.
