Album Review

Aloha began as a moderately abstract post-rock outfit, but there has always been a distinct pop influence even in their most cerebral efforts. Light Works, which at seven songs is just over half-an-hour, is either a short album or a really long EP, brings the band's gentle indie pop side completely to the fore: gone are the extended instrumental musings, the jazzy vibraphone solos, and the overall sense of musical connection to the softer side of the Chicago school of post-rock. In its place, Light Works offers seven sweet-and-sour chamber pop tunes built on acoustic guitars, chiming keyboards, minimal bass and percussion, and Tony Cavallario's lighter than air vocals. The Shins and Sufjan Stevens would be obvious contemporary touchstones, especially on songs as straightforward as the sweetly poppy "The End" and the gently wistful "Passengers." But the most on-the-nose comparison to the sound of Light Works is mid-period Talk Talk, circa The Colour of Spring. There's a similar sense of spaciousness to these effortlessly pretty and determinedly non-rocking tunes. The proggier end of Aloha's fan base might find Light Works distressingly insubstantial, even verging on (horrors!) "commercial," but for their last couple of albums, Aloha have slowly been moving in this more song-based and concise style anyway, so this is more of a culmination than a change of direction.

happiness is all in your mind

The DIY boys from BG are back. Giving us this tasty treat before the holidays. Aloha has spun another web of thought, melody and songs to embrace your lover to. This should be enjoyed with a friend and given out as a gift. Get a box of wine, dinner of your choice and think about your life. This is a stop and smelling of the flowers for aloha. Sort of quiet, sort of sentimental. A band that takes care of you from far far away. See them live to feel the true power. Thank you boys from an old friend.

Long Awaited Release

I have followed Aloha since That's Your Fire was released and as of late have not found the inspirational fluidity that was on their previous, until now. Their sound is so genuine and rough yet so refined; They make it seem so easy to sound so good. "Body Buzz" sets it all off with an inviting rhythm and a flowing melody that seems to pull you in. All of the tracks on this EP are amazing and seem to go so well with this time of year. This is a must for fans of Aloha and a great starting point for those who aren't.

Embracing the Changes

This is an intensely personal offering from a maturing group of musicians who view life differently a decade after starting out. I fear that some reviewers have missed the point. Why must every song be a strident statement in a forceful musical setting? True, there is a place for that, but late-night, from-the-heart conversations are valid too, and this is a musical equivalent to such. Aloha has always been honest with its audience, and this album is no exception. How can anyone not feel warmly toward a group who begins their musical statement by saying, "Hello, my friend . . . ?" The acoustic-driven intimacy of sound and lyric afford the listener some insight into the growth of a group that has spent years on the road performing, meeting their fans, and living up to the expectations of the public and a record company. It's something new from Aloha, to be sure, but it comes as a welcomed revelation. The listener is given the opportunity to experience a different side of the group. This is an outstanding addition to the Aloha catalog, and it's perfect listening for introspective moments.
