Straight-Ahead Rock

It's all in the songs, baby, and "Like a Dog" shows us once again that Izzy Stradlin is one of the most consistent songwriters in rock 'n' roll. This is Stradlin's most electric album since 1992's "Ju Ju Hounds," and he has, for the moment, eschewed the delta-blues, country and reggae styles in favor of straight-ahead rock with a good measure of punk. In fact, the trio of openers -- "Bomb," "Hammerhead" and "Snafu" -- suggest that this might indeed be a punk record, but from there Izzy transitions to the simple grinding rock at which he excels. (Trusty sideman Rick Richards' once again contributes his twangy lead guitar, so think of it as old-school Aerosmith with a Southern twist.) "Chop Away" is a beautiful electric ballad, and "Just Don't Know" is among the best songs Izzy has ever written. "Hell Song," "Rollin' On" and "On the Run" aren't far behind. And if you favor substance over style, Stradlin shows us just how well simple arrangements (two guitars, bass and drums) and simple production (no keyboards, not even backing vocals) can work when the material is strong. This stuff sounds live, and it was made to be played live. (So how 'bout a tour?) If there's a downside -- and there always is -- the lyrics are underdeveloped, as Izzy has always emphasized riffs, hooks and grooves to clever wordplay. And the short run time (another Izzy trademark) leaves the listener wanting. One can't help but suspect that Izzy had another 15 minutes of good material up his sleeve. Recorded in 2003, "Like a Dog" was never released on a label, but Stradlin later distributed promotional copies directly from the web. That means this record is virtually unknown, but make no mistake -- "Like a Dog" is among the best rock records of this decade. The irony here is that one of the cornerstone members of what was once the biggest band in the world has yet to reach beyond a devoted niche audience.

Rock Lives!

This is, without a doubt, a terrific album! I've always been a fan of Izzy and find all of his albums to be really great, but this one has such a great hard rock edge to it. Shades of "Appetite for Destruction" permeate this truly wonderful rock record. Izzy shows us with this album that not only is he still an amazing songwriter but that he still can rock harder than most. Highlights for me: "Bomb" "Chop Away" "On the Run" "Hammerhead"

I've got to be honest: I've always thought Izzy's solo albums were hit or miss affairs. Not this time. Like a Dog, from "Bomb" straight through to "Like a Dog", is really, really good. Like all of Izzy's stuff the lyrics are often...downbeat (check out "Hell Song" or "On the Run" for 2 examples)...but the music is very rocking, which makes a nice counterpoint. Highly recommended and I can't wait to take it on tour...I suspect it'll play very well through some of those New Mexico/Texas stretches of road.

The gals dug Axl and the musicians dug Slash, but the man in the back, guitarist Izzy Stradlin, was just as much an integral part of Guns N' Roses. Stradlin's exit from the group in 1991 also signaled the beginning of the end for G N' R, as they became more of the "Axl Rose Show" and less of a full-fledged band. Born in Lafayette, Indiana on April 8, 1962, Stradlin (whose real name is Jeff Isbell) developed a deep appreciation of the Rolling Stones and particularly Keith Richards. It wasn't long...
