iTunes Review

Solomon Burke has persevered. After their initial successes, many mid-60s R&B singers struggled with the ever-changing and fickle audiences that would often jump to the next big thing, leaving the veterans as yesterday’s news. Burke’s classic tone and his emotional elegance never deserted him. Over the years he has recorded a number of fine albums that never received the audience they deserved, but it never withered his confidence. 2008’s Like a Fire is an attempt by veteran producer Steve Jordan to supply Burke with a solid backing band — Danny Kortchmar on guitar, Larry Taylor on bass, Jordan on drums — and songs that bring out the best in Burke’s timbre. Cameos by Ben Harper and Keb’ Mo are welcomed, but hardly tip the balance of the album, which remains centered on Burke’s warm delivery for tunes such as the Eric Clapton penned title track, Keb’ Mo’s “We Don’t Need It,” and Harper’s “A Minute to Rest and a Second to Pray.”

Another great late-period album from the soul master!

If you've been keeping up with Solomon's work from the 21st century, you need to add this one to your collection. If not, start with the album Nashville and then go straight to this album. Highlights include a duet with Ben Harper on the intense A Minute to Rest and a Second to Pray, another duet with Keb' Mo' on the heartbreaking We Don't Need It, and the final song, an old Tin Pan Alley standard given a late-night feel that works incredibly well.. Solomon should make his next album an album of standards!

R.I.P. "Big Soul"

Smooth and edgy. Legendary singer performing songs written specifically for him by legends and to be legends; Ben Harper, Eric Clapton, Jesse Harris, Keb' Mo', Meegan Voss and Steve Jordan. Title track "Like a Fire" is worth the price of admission to some of the best music of this genre this decade. Album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album of 2008 only to be beat out by J. J. Cale and Eric Clapton for "The Road to Escondido."

While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience — he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit — he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was surrounded with sophisticated "uptown" arrangements and was provided with much of his material by his producers, particularly Bert Berns. The combination...
