I'm surprised I'm the only one...
who's reviewing this album. But not really, because this is quality music and good music tends not to be touched and/or get the attention that it deserves...I've never heard of Kate Akhurst prior this debut, but one listen to "Cause & Effect" and I was sold. This girl has "it" (whatever that "it" factor is). Her voice is like a cross between Vanessa Carlton (who's amazing) and a young Gwen Stefani. Her quirky and fun arrangements on her songs are what got my attention, however. Her lyrics are intelligent and solid and that, combined with her vocal delivery, is what held it. This Aussie has great things in store for her if she continues to make music like this fabulous debut. Well done. Standout tracks: "Cause & Effect", "Damn", "War In Your Warning" and "Undo".
Playful
I really like her voice, which is comparable to Nelly Furtado's, however I greatly enjoy her vocal range even more, which she utilizes to her advantage. The spread of songs and skill of this album are make it great for both Metro or at work. My roomate and I have caught ourselves spontaneously moving to the music as well. I normally don't like the harsher sounding instruments, but the use of a horn occasionally is tasteful and adds character.I would advise this for someone who likes female vocalists in general and more playful tunes.
ummmm...am I the only one?
Ok, please tell me that I am not the only one who thinks Kate sounds a little or a LOT like Britney Spears? She has similar inflections and tone, but I am so thankful a different style (and I am sure different moral code). I still really like her voice, but it does creep me out a little especially in the song Cause & Effect.
