Album Review

Occasionally sounding like an eccentric counterpart to the A Clockwork Orange soundtrack and frequently displaying a likeness to Air (which released the record on its label), the debut from Sebastien Tellier is fluently orchestrated. With the suggestion from Tellier to listen to the album "alone and by candlelight," the Parisian draws from an eerie palette of Moog, theremin, horns, and piano. Vocals are rare but just as haunting (the end of "Trilogie Femme" has a woman screaming). Relying on this instrumentation to produce a somber atmosphere, the recording becomes all the more remarkable with the absence of percussion.

The Colors of Black

If Pink Floyds stepfather gently seduced Mozart's evil bastard child, there would be Sebastien and this album. Genius work for the patiently ill.

WOW

This album is truly a magnificent work of art. If you like music that takes you on a ride visually and emotionally, then you absolutely must have this. Had me on every single note. L'incroyable vérité is wondrous and screaming with beauty every second along the way.

Can't find the words....

I first heard of Sebastien Tellier thanks to Late Night Tales, by AIR. AIR's Late Night Tales playlist is one of the best compilations I have ever heard. It's a real big mixture of songs, including Minnie Riperton, the Cure, Black Sabath, Japan, etc. The Sebastien song they included is from the Narco soundtrack, and the track is titled 'Le Long De La Riviere Tendre' and it was such a terrific, electronic, fully instrumental piece unlike anything I have ever heard before. I just HAD to get more from this guy, and how happy I am that I did! This particular album is very different from 'Sexuality' and "Politics' because it's far more deep, emotional, and dark than his other works which tend to be a LOT more pop-ish and fun. This album reminds me of a nightmare with a facade. The facade is there to make us think everything is fine and dandy, but then Sebastien adds subtle elements that hint towards horrific, dark alleyways; Such as the creepy, beckoning whistle in 'Une vie de papa" or the bone-chilling scream that brings 'Trilogie Femme' to a close.

It's really not hard to understand why Mr. Tellier would advice his audience to listen to the album "alone by candlelight" as the review states. The very first track on the album sound like something straight out of Dario Argento's film 'Suspiria.' Very Goblin-esque.

'Fantino' is definitely one of the best tracks on this album. Sofia Coppola (being the huge AIR fan that she is) used the song for Lost in Translation... and oh how happy I get when I hear it in the film. :D Universe is also one of the best this album has to offer.

It's also kind of strange how this album's title is French for "The Incredible Truth" when one of my all-time favorite films is Hal Hartley's "The Unbelievable Truth." Or that Sebastian covered the song "La Dolce Vita" in his Sessions album, when one of my favorite Fellini films is La Dolce Vita.... (soundtrack is done by Nino Rota... yet another favorite musician of mine!). I love all the connections. :)

Biography

Born: 1975 in France

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Sébastien Tellier is a multifaceted instrumentalist/singer from Paris, France's 17th Arrondissement, an elongated arts-and-culture-rich territory located near the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Élysées. After Tellier's "Fantino," a forlorn and beautiful pop confection, appeared on the Source label's 1999 Source Material various-artists compilation, it caught the ear of fellow labelmates Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, better known as Air. The duo and their management team eventually signed...
