Album Review

Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 is a good 12-track collection of Linda Ronstadt's biggest hits from the early '70s, beginning with the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum" and running through "Tracks of My Tears," from 1975's Prisoner in Disguise. In between, all of her best-known songs — "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," "Heat Wave" — are included, plus selected minor hits, making it an excellent overview of her peak years.

Linda Part One

This cd captures Linda at her rooty country best. She started recording with Capital records as a lead singer with the group Stone Pony's and their two biggest hits "Long, Long Time" and "Different Drum" are included here. Linda as a soloist was at her rawest here, her youth is somewhat betrayed on "Desperado." While this and it's follow-up volume two do a great job distilling Linda's output to the essential hits, the sound quality leaves a LOT to be desired. The bulk of these songs and volume two's were left off her boxed set because Linda wanted to focus on her album cuts for the diehard fans, some hits ultimately couldn't be avoided. DCC (Digital Compact Classics) did a remaster of the two hits albums and released the remasters on audiophile gold cd's. The remastered sound is better but not superior, shame really because the cd's commanded $30.00 a piece. Ultimately Warner Brothers did a disservice to Linda with a single cd "The Very Best Of" when clearly Linda warrents a comprehensive double disc set of her hits. In the meantime this cd and it's follow-up are analog transfers and not remastered, barely audible on an iPod.
