Album Review

Subscribing to the time-honored practice of striking when the iron is hot, the Jonas Brothers put out Lines, Vines and Trying Times in June of 2009, making it their third album in one year. True, Lines and A Little Bit Longer were separated by a soundtrack to a concert film, but the flood of product is a true reflection of the peak of the group's popularity, just as how the over-produced, stretched-thin Lines is a reflection of their hectic schedule. Where A Little Bit Longer was built on a strong song foundation, Lines, Vines and Trying Times feels constructed from the outside in, with the concepts coming before the tunes, concepts that all take the Brothers Jonas further away from the fizzy, power pop fun. Lines is designed to showcase a mature Jonas Brothers, who wear their maturation in an increased stylistic range, and fussed-over arrangements that lend this a stiffness of a band well beyond their years. Pop classicists that they are, the Jonases are a bit more comfortable with immaculate arrangements than they are with the expansion, as they fumble through a couple of country songs and "Don't Charge Me for the Crime," a truly bizarre duet with Common where they gamely, lamely affect a hard-boiled pose. Tellingly, most of the forced moments were written in collaboration with outsiders such as Cathy Dennis and Greg Garbowsky, the latter being responsible for co-writing "Poison Ivy," a power pop tune so labored it reveals just how good A Little Bit Longer was. Overthinking and over-production are the primary flaws on Lines, where every point is hammered home by horns transported from the waning days of the Reagan administration. This oddly yuppified production is more Taylor Hicks than Taylor Swift, but the presence of Joe's former girlfriend is felt elsewhere, whether it's in the lyric's heartbroken love songs (as well as a couple of rocking accusations), or how Miley Cyrus stands in for Taylor on one of those country songs. But Swift also comes to mind because she and the Jonas Brothers are trying to do a similar thing: make teen pop that skews adult in its sound and form. The JoBros did it effortlessly on A Little Bit Longer but on Lines, Vines and Trying Times the seams are showing, which makes it a little bit harder to enjoy, even if there are certainly moments where all their craft and charm click, resulting in some fine pop that points out what's missing from the rest of the record.

Pretty Darn Good.

I'm not a Jonas Brothers fan, nor have I ever been. Their last album was, in my opinion, horrendously overrated, and that vapid "Burnin Up" song was garbage. But since my little sister loves them, I decided to buy this album for her. I took a listen for myself and was pleasantly surprised. The first track is catchy, if a bit pompous. The second is the same. Not the best first impression of the band, needless to say. But tracks 3-11, with a few exceptions, are solid pop-rock that will feel at home in most people's music libraries. Fly with Me is adorable (though completely sappy), Poison Ivy has a killer hook despite its moronic lyrics, Hey Baby isn't half bad. Before the Storm is very sweet, although I could not care less about whatever personal drama inspired it, and gave me a bit of respect for the bandmembers as songwriters. What Did I do to Your Heart is a solid-if-typical song, while Much Better is a welcome change from the Jonas Brothers' usual lineup of easy listening and pop tracks. Black Keys, like Before the Storm, is well-writen and has good vocals. Tracks 10 and 12 are the weakest of the bunch, but track 11--Turn Right--is one of the best. Bottom Line: It's not life-changing, but it's a surefire improvement. The Jonas Brothers are on the right track and with luck their next album will be even better. Best Tracks -- World War III, Fly With Me, Before the Storm, Black Keys

ALL YOU 13-YEAR-OLD JONAS BROTHERS FAN GIRLS don't click "Not Helpful" just because i rated 2 stars.

Maybe the fame is getting to the jonas brothers. It seems like their music has been going downhill lately. I was disappointed when i heard this one. I was in the 7th grade when their very first album came out. (yes, the one with "Mandy") my & my friends liked the jonas brothers before they were even a popular at all. seriously no one had heard of them back then. then their self-titled cd "Jonas Brothers" came out next. that album was THE BOMB. it was so amazing, every song was cute & catchy. (by the waay, "SOS" is my ultimate favorite song by them). Then their next cd "A Little Bit Longer" came out. I bought it, (being a fan of the previous album). Boy was i wrong, it wasnt very good. it had a few good songs, like: 'A little bit longer' & 'burnin up' but they got old real fast. So ive been looking forward to their next cd: 'Lines, vines, & trying times" for quite a while now, hoping it would redeem the jonas brothers after the album 'a little bit longer'. & now i find myself writing this review. this one is Not good at all. Just everything about it: music, lyrics, melody, instruments, singing, tuning, etc. (being a musician myself, i notice these things.) [i play piano, saxophone, guitar, & violin] & now being a senior in high school & i still have to admit, i love the cd 'Jonas Brothers'. but 'Lines, Vines, & trying Times', not so much. "Paranoid" sounds like something Shania Twain would sing.. i dont know what it is but it has a country twist. still not a very good song. & why is Nick Jonas screaming in "World War 3"? "Keep it Real" sounds like a rip off of the song "Right back where we started" by Maxine Gayle. (listen to both & you will agree) the only song with great potential is "Black Keys", its pretty good. Still nothing AMAZING on this album.. *sigh*

OHMYGOSSH!

Jonas Brothers have done it again, but this time better on so many levels! I already have my album; I received it in the mail Monday, June 15, 2009 at 1:03 PM EST. “Lines, Vines, and Trying Times” is their most mature album. Nick’s sweet voice is very prominent throughout the entire CD. Joe’s sexiness is sooo noticeable on the album, it’s unbelievable. Kevin’s musical talents are everywhere, and who doesn’t love that? Our boys are growing up, ( : Not only is their style different than that in the past 3 albums, but they have genres of all sorts :D. I absolutely love the country flair; it adds so much admiration to the album! Even if you don’t like country, you’ll still love each and every song. (Even though it’s not present in all of them. haha) I’ll make a list of the tracks in order and in a few words tell you what I think of each... just a simple run-down ( : WORLD WAR III - oh so catchy, impossible to resist! <3 PARANOID - who hasn’t heard it?! It explains everyone's life at times. FLY WITH ME - possibly the cutest song on the planet. OhMyGosh, adorable<33 POISON IVY - we can all relate, trust me. Pretty funny in the sense that it doesn’t LITERALLY mean “poison ivy” aha HEY BABY - one of those songs that you just want to get up and bust a move to ( : BEFORE THE STORM - Miley’s voice is beautiful, along with Nick’s! Their whole relationship is revealed ( ; WHAT DID I DO TO YOUR HEART - very country, get up and dance! MUCH BETTER - “Our fans mean the world to us and ‘Much Better’ is giving back to them. After two years of their loyalty and dedication we felt there was no more personal way to give back than to share our influences, from the Bee Gee’s to Neil Diamond” – Joe Jonas. < That explains it. BLACK KEYS - Love. Pure. Simplicity. DON'T CHARGE ME FOR THE CRIME - ahahha sooo fun ! TURN RIGHT - into my arms ( ; lol, you’ll see! Very powerful and it’s so… intense<3 DON'T SPEAK - Joe, this song makes the album. The instrumental beginning is genius! I’M NOT SURE IF “KEEP IT REAL” WILL BE AVAILABLE ON ITUNES, BUT HERE… ( : KEEP IT REAL - Fun Fun Fun! OMG you will literally dance until you can’t breathe<3 So, I realize this is getting very long, but I wanted to show my appreciation. I recommend buying this album with all of my heart. You’ll love it, cry over it, laugh, smile. You won’t be resentful, I promise. ( : you should also buy it in stores.. wouldn’t you love to have their album intheflesh?! <33 Thank You Nicholas, Joseph, and Paul Kevin Jonas II for introducing yourselves to us, the fans. This album has truly changed my and I’m sure others’ lives. I love you three for everything you do. Honestly, your songs tell the stories of mine and more lives in unfathomable ways. I really, truly love you all with every inch of my heart<3 ( :

One of the most popular teenaged groups of the 2000s, the Jonas Brothers crafted hook-filled power pop anthems in the vein of McFly, Hanson, and the Modern Lovers. The young New Jersey natives (while readying their 2006 debut, brothers Joseph, Kevin, and Nicholas Jonas topped out at 16, 17, and 13, respectively) were reared in the city of Wyckoff under the tutelage of musical parents.
