Album Review

Serving the Lord and testifying the whole way, Christian hip-hop artist Sho Baraka gets more aggressive with his Gospel on this second effort, Lions & Liars. “Radio don’t play us/Television mock us/The truth is still spreadin’/There’s no way they can stop us,” he declares on key track “Shut Us Down,” and throughout the album he takes a “you’re either with us or you’ll suffer the consequences” stance. Putting some serious power behind the rapper’s quest to convert the world are crunching rock guitars and Flo Rida-styled club tracks plus an all-star Christian rap guest list that goes from Lecrae to Tedashii. Even on this stately and purposeful album, the clever Sho still lets some levity in, shining and smiling on the fourth-quarter highlight “Kobe Bryant on 'Em,” which features the nondenominational gem “When life throws you curveballs/Nolan Ryan on ‘em.”

One of the best Christian Rap releases in recent times

I have been very skeptical of Christian rap releases recently. I think there has been a lack of creativity, innovation and diversity; finding different ways to say the same things. Also, there has been a lack of Christian artists whose art is actually rooted in the issues of real people dealing with real life situations and THEN transporting the listener out of their circumstances by taking them to Jesus Christ. That being said, all of these elements are present on this release by Sho. The lyricism is superb; there is a diversity of styles, as well as creative ways to say things that EVERY Christian rap album has (i.e. every Christian rap lp has a song for girls finding themselves in Christ). This album is very much rooted in real issues of the community and of individuals. There are songs about the opposition faced by Xian rappers from the world and the church (Shut Us Down), and songs about personal quests for identity (My Life). I also love the theme of being "Lions" for Christ. It is an empowering call that serves as a sort of pep talk/speech meant to inspire the forces for battle. Overall, this is an excellent album and EVERY Christian rap head, and even regular hip hop heads need to hear it.
