Album Review

This is the second of Magna Carta's one-time-only groupings and the second to feature bassist Tony Levin. Fortunately for all concerned, it's light years beyond Black Light Syndrome, which paired Levin with guitarist Steve Stevens and drummer Terry Bozzio in an ill-conceived and poorly executed set of improvisations. There is one such impromptu excursion here, the concluding 28-minute "Three Minute Warning," but even it holds up favorably by comparison. But it's the rest of the tunes here that showcase the versatility of Dream Theater members John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy and Dregs keyboardist Jordan Rudess. They fit the fusion/prog rock tag, with plenty of chopsmanship on display, but also with some allegiance to melody and restraint. Not likely to get any radio play, but then that wasn't the point of the session.

BUY IT.

Paradigm Shift (5/5) one of the best instrumentals out there! This one's a must-have. Osmosis (4/5) a very groovy song, the name suites it well. Kindered Spirits (5/5) Amazing guitar, must-have. The Stretch (3/5) repetative, impromptu solo at the end. Freedom of Speech (3/5) very melodic, very nice guitar playing. Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure (4/5) this song shows what the bass and drums can do. It's called this because, during a photo session, the photographer kept calling Tony Levin and Mike Portnoy "Chris" and "Kevin." State of Grace (2.5/5) meh... kinda sappy. Universal Mind (6/5) AMAZING. Three Minute Warning (?/5) CAUTION: "Three Minute Warning" is not for the musically faint-hearted, impatient, or critics of extreme self-indulgence.

The only instrumental album that is better then this is LTE 2.

Maximum Awesomeness

When I heard that Dream Theater formed a side project, I bought it right away. I was taken aback. The opener Paradigm Shift is one of the best, if not the best I have ever heard. My favorite song by far. I give every other song five stars too. BUY THIS ALBUM. This is such an underrated and unrecognized band. They should be more popular than those kiddie bands like the Jonas Brothers.
