iTunes Review
The Walkmen crank out a tough factory rhythm for “Angela Surf City.” It’s the sound of man battling against the machine. The drums turn things dark and greasy like much great rock ‘n’ roll. But the band operates on a different level. They add lightness to cosmopolitan-sounding tunes such as “Juveniles,” “Blue As Your Blood” and “Stranded,” where singer Hamilton Leithauser sings with an extra lounge lizard in his voice. There’s a somber undertow to “Victory” while “All My Great Designs” uses a great amount of air in its arrangement to make a greater impact. The band’s minimalism is quite appealing. “Woe is Me” is actually quite quick and bright, despite its title. “Torch Song” could be an old R&B/Doo Wop ballad from the 1950s. “While I Shovel the Snow” is another aching ballad with a sense of wit mixed in with its tears. The title track and “Orange Sunday” bring things to a solemn and quiet close.

The wait is over...
Brilliant! The Walkmen are an underestimated, under appreciated, and underrated band who have captured my heart. Their sound is haunting and unique, harkening back to a time when records were cherished and listened to from beginning to end. Hamilton Leithauser has a voice that will stay with me forever. 2010 has been an extraordinary year for great new music. The Walkmen have just put the icing on the cake. Best album of 2010.
Pretty Terrific...
I have to say, I've been listening to an early release of this for a couple of weeks and at first I was pretty pissed. Anyone who's seen these guys live know that they bring it. The past two shows I've been lucky enough to attend they did a version of Juveniles with whistling in place of guitars and to be quite honest when I heard the guitar version on the album, I was taken aback. It took me a few listens to get the idea behind Lisbon. It only took one week for me to get fully on board. The title track closes the album better than any song I've heard this year. Standouts include Angela Surf City, Blue as Your Blood, and Torch Song. I'm beginning to really love this album... just as I have every previous Walkmen album. Not to be missed.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME......5 STARS? WE'VE BEEN HAD!!!!
This album is like and inside joke between THE WALKMEN but the joke is on the listener and THAT'S THE PUNCH LINE!
Last week it was the let down of the new Interpol album which is just plain and dull and didn't even make my iphone playlist, but I really didn't care too much cause a new WALKMEN album was a week away. I Loved YOU AND ME it was the perfect hybrid of western/punk/alternative/hard and soft just a totally unique sound and very innovative but this album has no WOW factor. Now I know a lot of the 5 star reviews are just blind lead die hard fans who love THE WALKMEN but to give this album a 5 star shows their deaf too. That being said Im a huge die hard WALKMEN fan, I've even traveled to a festival A HUNDRED MILES AWAY to watch them play in 116 degree weather once they finished I left. WALKMEN whatever you changed change it back if you quit drinking or doing drugs start up again if you're happily married get divorced, get depressed, whatever....cause YOU LOST YOUR EDGE. I heard through the rumor mill you guys were working on like 20 something new songs, These were the pick of the litter? I don't know who this album was written for but it sure wasn't the fans. Seriously get in the studio TODAY give it a one month and do a brand new album but put some heart and balls back into your art. In true rock and roll it's last from cradle to the grave, there's no retirement home! Just cause your base fans are getting older doesn't mean we can't still rock. Listening to this album is just plain sad, depressing and a reminder everyone has their heyday and lose's it. The anticipation of me getting this album was like WAITING ON A SUBWAY LINE but after listing to it, instead of getting on board I'd rather jump in front of it. If you guys need help writing a new album hit me up seriously all it would take is one month and it would sound so much better than this album. Just to be clear I love you guy's and thank you for all the great songs and albums you've made but I hate this album it just doesn't meet the fans expectations and it doesn't showcase your guy's talent and creativity. Should of been named The GIVING UP!
