iTunes Review

Seattle isn’t often thought of as a country music town, but the nine-piece Maldives will surely make a case for the possibility. The Northwest band’s 2009 album, following an earlier self-titled album and EP, is every bit a convincing piece of post-Band country rock n’ roll. From the opening harmony attack of “Goodbye” through the pedal steel fueled rockers (“Time Is Right Now,” “Do You Still,” “Tequila Sunday”) and the sullen bar room weepers (“Cold November,” “Say Nothing,” “Whidbey Island Blues”), the Maldives are a top notch addition to a tradition that includes the Jayhawks and Drive-By Truckers, and that shows no signs of slowing down as long as the songs arrive. Singer-songwriter Jason Dodson returns to his Virginia roots and takes his large but never cumbersome group along for the ride, carving out a piece of musical real estate just west of the Long Ryders, Jason and the Scorchers, and other important bands of the genre. Harmonies, fiddle, accordion, harmonica and, naturally, pedal steel all make for genuine rustic good times of the back porch variety.

Best album so far this year

Honestly, just about the best album I've heard to date this year. As solid musically as can be.

Worth the wait

If you've ever seen them live, you'll recognize many of these new songs. Just a fantastic band all the way around, and a great new album.

Awesomeness...

One of my very favorite albums. Ever. Perfect as background party music, clean the house music, or dinner soundtrack. Great for road trippin', honky tonkin', beer drinkin', music loving people... And everyone else, too. Highly recommended.

Genre: Country

Years Active: '00s

One of the most promising bands on the Pacific Northwest's roots rock scene, the Maldives are an expansive nine-piece band whose music recalls the mature and graceful storytelling of the Band and the rougher, more forceful attack of alt-country acts such as the Old 97's and the Drive-By Truckers. The Maldives (named for a string of islands in the Indian Ocean) are led by lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Jason Dodson, who formed the band in early 2002, not long after relocating to Vancouver,...
